Pittsburgh Career Institute Closing

November 11, 2022 4:14 am

PITTSBURGH — (WPXI) – Pittsburgh Career Institute is closing its doors in two weeks. The news came as a shock to students. “I went into school today expecting to take a physics exam. I walked in and it was a paper saying, ‘we’re closing down, sorry,’” one student told us. She has been a student at PCI since May. On its website, the school said officials learned of an issue with accreditation in August. Another student says she received text messages from classmates that the school was shutting down. “You give a two-week notice to a job when you’re quitting, not when you’re closing a whole institution,” she said. WPXI reached out to PCI and received this statement:
“A number of factors outside the school’s control have led to closing. … Staff educators are working hard to find each and every one of our students an option to continue and complete their education at PCI or another institution without interruption.”
The students are waiting to find out if their credits will transfer. PCI is planning to keep representatives on campus until Dec. 31 so students can complete their clinicals and get help transferring.

Russia Begins To Withdraw From Key Ukrainian City

November 10, 2022 8:44 am

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – Russia says its troops began pulling out of a strategic Ukrainian city on. That would represent a humiliating defeat in the grinding war. Ukrainian officials acknowledged Moscow’s forces had no choice but to flee but stopped short of declaring victory in Kherson. It was difficult to know what was happening in the port city. Some Western observers said they believed the Kremlin’s forces have been forced to pull out – though a full withdrawal could take some time. Ukrainian officials have warned for weeks that any announcement of a Russian retreat should be treated skeptically. But on Thursday, Ukraine’s armed forces commander-in-chief said that “the enemy had no other choice but to resort to fleeing.”

U.S. Consumer Inflation Eased To 7.7%

November 10, 2022 8:41 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – Price increases moderated in the United States last month in the latest sign that the inflation pressures that have gripped the nation might be easing as the economy slows and consumers grow more cautious.  Consumer inflation reached 7.7% in October from a year earlier and 0.4% from September. The year-over-year gain was the smallest since January. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, “core” inflation rose 6.3% in the past 12 months and 0.3% from September. The numbers were all lower than economists had expected. Even with last month’s tentative easing of inflation, the Federal Reserve is widely expected to keep raising interest rates to try to stem persistently high price increases.

WILBUR-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. (AP) – Tropical Storm Nicole has sent multiple homes collapsing into the Atlantic Ocean. Its damaging coastal surge was hitting beachfront properties in Daytona Beach Shores that lost their last protections during Hurricane Ian. Nicole is expected to dump lots of rain over a large area of the southeastern United States, with up to six inches falling over the Blue Ridge Mountains.  (Photo:  ABC News)

GOP Closer To House Win; Senate To Hinge On Runoff

November 10, 2022 4:17 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – Republicans inched closer to a narrow House majority while control of the Senate hinges on tight Arizona, Nevada and Georgia races. The midterm election defied expectations of sweeping conservative victories driven by frustration over inflation and President Joe Biden’s leadership. There was a strong possibility that, for the second time in two years, the Senate majority could come down to a runoff in Georgia next month, with Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker failing to earn enough votes to win outright. In the House, Republicans were within a dozen seats Wednesday night of the 218 needed to take control.

Trump Urged To Delay 2024 Launch

November 10, 2022 4:16 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – It was supposed to be a red wave that former President Donald Trump could triumphantly ride to the GOP nomination as he prepares to launch another White House run. Instead, Tuesday night’s disappointing results for Republicans are raising new questions about Trump’s appeal and the future of a party that has fully embraced him, seemingly at its peril, while at the same time giving new momentum to his most potent potential rival. Indeed, some allies were calling on Trump Wednesday to delay his planned announcement, saying the full focus needs to be a runoff election in Georgia that could again determine control of the Senate.

Charges Dismissed Against Teen In Kennywood Shooting

November 10, 2022 4:09 am

PITTSBURGH — (WPXI) – Charges against the teenager accused of being one of the suspects in the Kennywood shooting in September have been dropped. Darryl Pirl was charged as an adult and is facing two charges of aggravated assault, firearms not to be carried without a license, possession of a firearm by a minor and recklessly endangering another person. According to court paperwork, Pirl was grazed in the leg with a bullet but ran before police got there. He was driven to the hospital by private means nearly two hours later. The hospital staff collected his clothes as evidence and swabbed his hands. Police say Pirl had gunshot residue on his hands and on the inside and outside of his clothing, indicating he fired the gun from underneath his shirt. He also had bullet holes in his shirt, but no wounds to his upper body which medical staff found to be odd. Police say Pirl was on juvenile probation at the time of the shooting at Kennywood. According to the judge at Pirl’s preliminary hearing, the Commonwealth did not prove burden in the case which led to the charges being dismissed.
