UK’s Truss Quits After Turmoil

October 20, 2022 8:43 am

LONDON (AP) – British Prime Minister Liz Truss has resigned – bowing to the inevitable after a tumultuous six-week term in which her policies triggered turmoil in financial markets and a rebellion in her party obliterated her authority. Just a day earlier Truss had vowed to stay in power, saying she was “a fighter and not a quitter.” But Truss left Thursday after she was forced to abandon many of her economic policies and lost control of Conservative Party discipline. Her departure leaves a divided party seeking a leader who can unify its warring factions.

Judge: Trump Knew Vote Fraud Claims Were False

October 20, 2022 4:22 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump signed legal documents challenging the results of the 2020 election that included voter fraud claims he knew to be false, a federal judge said in a ruling Wednesday. U.S. District Court Judge David Carter in an 18-page opinion ordered the release of those emails between Trump and attorney John Eastman (pictured) to the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. He said those communications cannot be withheld because they include evidence of potential crimes. “The emails show that President Trump knew that the specific numbers of voter fraud were wrong but continued to tout those numbers, both in court and to the public,” Carter wrote. The judge specifically cited claims from Trump’s attorneys that Fulton County in Georgia had improperly counted more than 10,000 votes of dead people, felons and unregistered voters. Those false allegations were part of a filing that Trump’s legal team made in Georgia state court on Dec. 4, 2021.

Putin Adds Martial Law In Ukraine Regions

October 20, 2022 4:16 am

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – Russian President Vladimir Putin doubled down Wednesday on his faltering invasion of Ukraine with a declaration of martial law in four illegally annexed regions and preparations within Russia for draconian new restrictions and crackdowns. Putin’s drastic efforts to tighten his grip on Ukrainians and Russians follow a series of embarrassing setbacks: stinging battlefield defeats, sabotage and troubles with his troop mobilization. The martial law order belies the Kremlin’s attempts to portray life in the annexed regions as returning to normal. The reality is that a military administration has replaced civilian leaders in the southern city of Kherson and a mass evacuation from the city is underway as a Ukrainian counteroffensive grinds on.

Election Deniers Could Make Deep Changes In Arizona

October 20, 2022 4:14 am

PHOENIX (AP) – The Republicans running for Arizona’s three top statewide offices have said they would not have signed off on the presidential results if they had held office in 2020. They’ve also signaled that they want to overhaul the battleground state’s elections. Election experts say any one of the candidates running for governor, secretary of state or attorney general, if they win in November, could try to tilt the 2024 election toward former President Donald Trump if he runs again for president. That could happen through a refusal to certify an election he loses or through pre-emptive changes to the election process that could make it less likely for a Democrat to win.

Ukraine’s Utilities Threatened By Russia In New Phase

October 20, 2022 4:13 am

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – Russia has declared its intention to increase its targeting of Ukraine’s power, water and other vital infrastructure in its latest phase of the nearly 8-month-old war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that Moscow’s forces have destroyed 30% of the country’s power stations since Oct. 10. But Ukrainians are vowing to stand firm despite the attacks that threaten cuts in electricity, water and heat. They say they have stockpiled flashlights, candles and firewood. They have stored up canned and preserved vegetables as well as bottled water. And they have plenty of blankets and warm clothing. They also are used to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s using energy as a weapon.

Emergency crews responded to the scene in the 2300 block of Ardmore Boulevard around 9:30 a.m. “Some people were sitting at the intersection down there they said it sounded like an atomic bomb going off when it hit the structure,” said Forest Hills Station 153 Assistant Fire Chief Jim Theilacker. It took crews around 30 minutes to get the driver out of the bus. The driver was then taken to a hospital in stable condition. There were no kids on the bus at the time of the crash.
