Trump Asking Iowans To Help Him ‘Win Big’ At Caucuses

October 8, 2023 7:57 am

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Donald Trump is calling for a show of strength in Iowa, arguing before big audiences that dominating in the Republican presidential caucuses in January would signal to voters around the country his strength in the November election next year. Trump’s afternoon stops in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids were his third and fourth in a little more than two weeks, part of a stepped-up campaign schedule. Late-summer polls of likely GOP caucus attendees showed Trump well ahead of his opponents. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis hopes to reignite attention with a stepped-up Iowa campaign and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is seeking to seize on new interest since the two GOP presidential debates.

Israel Battles Hamas For Second Day

October 8, 2023 7:54 am

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israeli soldiers are battling Hamas fighters in the streets of southern Israel and launching retaliation strikes across Gaza. The fighting was still underway on Sunday more than 24 hours after the Palestinian militant group launched an unprecedented incursion into Israel. The fighters took captives back into the coastal enclave, including women, children and the elderly, who they will likely try to trade for thousands of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. Israeli media say at least 300 people have been killed, including 26 soldiers. Palestinian officials say more than 300 people have killed in Gaza. A brief exchange of strikes between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group meanwhile raised fears of a broader conflict.

Still No Powerball Jackpot Winner

October 8, 2023 7:52 am

There is still no jackpot winner in Powerball, as the grand prize jumped to an estimated $1.55 billion after no ticket matched all five white numbers and the red Powerball on Saturday night. The numbers selected were 47-54-57-60-65 and the red Powerball was 19. The multiplier was 3X. The current streak of 34 consecutive drawings now trails only the mark of 41, set in 2021 and 2022, according to The Associated Press. If someone wins the big prize on Monday night, they will have two options: An annuity, in which the winner receives one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year, or the lump sum option. Choosing the second option will make the cash value amount approximately $679.8 million before taxes, lottery officials said. A pair of $2 million tickets were sold — one each in Iowa and Maine, lottery officials said. Ten people matched five balls and won $1 million apiece. Two winning tickets each were sold in Massachusetts and Texas, with one each sold in California, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. The $1.55 billion remains the third-largest jackpot in Powerball history, but there is a chance that Monday’s amount could surpass the $1.586 billion that was won on Jan. 13, 2016. Three tickets — one each in California, Florida and Tennessee — split that jackpot.

Man Acquitted In Slaying Of Officer Convicted Of Assault

October 8, 2023 7:40 am

GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) — A man acquitted in the shooting death of a western Pennsylvania police officer eight years ago has been convicted of assaulting a deputy sheriff as law enforcement officers were trying to serve an arrest warrant nearly two years ago. Jurors in Westmoreland County convicted 39-year-old Ray Shetler Jr. of aggravated assault and other counts in the December 2021 confrontation in St. Clair Township. His attorney declined comment. In 2018, Shetler was acquitted of murder in the November 2015 shooting death of 54-year-old police officer Lloyd Reed, who had responded to a domestic violence call. Shetler said he didn’t know Reed was an officer and acted in self-defense.

Huge Hike Ahead In Washington Trash Collection Costs

October 7, 2023 3:00 am

Residents in the city of Washington are facing a huge hike in the cost of their trash collection.  At last night’s Washington City Council meeting, board members voted to award a new trash hauling contract to Bigs Sanitation.  Council say the five-year contract is for manual collection and residents will not be limited to the number of containers that they can leave out for collection.  But, the new contract comes with a sizable increase in costs.  City Administrator Donn Henderson says residents will now pay roughly three-hundred-dollars per household, up from about two-hundred and forty-dollars.  Henderson says the city received bids from Bigs Sanitation, County Hauling and Waste Management and they bid out several options that included automated pickup and manual pickup with both limited and unlimited containers. The contract was awarded to Bigs Sanitation because the company came in about four-hundred-thousand-dollars cheaper than the others.  Council also amended its ordinance governing the business privilege tax abatement. The abatement program once was a city-wide program, it will now be limited to the central business district only. Once again Mayor Scott Putnam put out a call for volunteers to serve on several city boards. The city is looking to fill vacancies on the Zoning Hearing Board, Planning Commission and Civil Service Board. They are also anticipating vacancies on the Washington/East Washington Joint Authority and Washington Business District Authority. Applications are available on line and at City Hall.
