September 26, 2022 2:52 am

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. (AP) – Authorities say a gun found after a weekend shooting at a western Pennsylvania amusement park that wounded three people had been reported stolen in Ohio last year. Allegheny County police said Monday that a trace of the weapon found after Saturday night’s shooting at Kennywood Park indicated that the firearm had been reported stolen from a vehicle in Columbus in August 2021. Witnesses told investigators that two groups of teenagers were involved in an altercation in front of the Musik Express ride and shots were fired shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday. Police said a 39-year-old man and two 15-year-old boys suffered leg wounds.  Kennywood was celebrating the first night of its Phantom Fall Fest, scheduled to run through Oct. 16. The park’s website says the attraction will reopen on Friday.

North Korea Test Fires Missile Into Sea

September 25, 2022 8:03 am

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea has fired a short-range ballistic missile toward its eastern seas, extending a provocative streak in weapons testing as a U.S. aircraft carrier visits South Korea for joint military exercises in response to the North’s growing nuclear threat. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile launched Sunday from the western inland town of Taechon flew 370 miles cross-country on a maximum altitude of 37 miles before landing in waters off North Korea’s eastern coast. It’s possible that Sunday’s test could soon be followed with another ballistic launch as South Korean officials said Saturday that they detected signs that North Korea was preparing to test a missile designed to be fired from submarines.

Canadian Military Called In For Fiona Cleanup

September 25, 2022 8:00 am

TORONTO (AP) — Canadian troops are being sent to assist the recovery from the devastation of storm Fiona, which swept away houses, stripped off roofs and knocked out power across the country’s Atlantic provinces. After surging north from the Caribbean as a hurricane, Fiona came ashore before dawn Saturday as a post-tropical cyclone, battering Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Quebec with hurricane-strength winds, heavy rains and huge waves. Defense Minister Anita Anand says troops will help remove fallen trees and other debris, restore transportation links and do whatever else is required for as long as it takes. She hasn’t specified how many troops will be deployed. No fatalities or serious injuries have been confirmed, though police say a woman is listed as missing.

Winter On The Way For Ukraine And Russia

September 25, 2022 7:59 am

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The onset of autumnal weather in Ukraine is making fields too muddy for tanks and beginning to cloud Ukrainian efforts to take back more Russian-held territory before winter freezes the battlefields. The clock is ticking for both sides. Russia is rushing to call up of hundreds of thousands of men to throw into the seven-month war, seeking to reverse its recent losses. The mobilization is sparking Russian protests, with fresh demonstrations Sunday. It is also opening splits in Europe about whether fighting-age Russian men fleeing in droves should be welcomed or turned away.

Hearing For Suspected Jollick Manor Shooter Continued

September 25, 2022 2:56 am

A Friday preliminary hearing scheduled for the suspect that is accused of killing 19-year-old Antonio Martinez of Tennessee in a July shooting in Jollick Manor was continued. Fifteen minutes before the hearing, the Washington County Jail informed attorneys that 23-year-old Jamil Carr, whose last known residence was Washington, would not be transported to the courthouse because of a five day mandatory lockdown due to Covid-19. Carr was available by video to participate in his hearing but just as he did in an earlier preliminary hearing, he complained that he was unable to hear the proceedings. The judge initially tried to conduct the hearing but Carr kept interrupting stating that he could not hear and wanted to discuss details of his defense directly with his attorney. The judge relented and continued the hearing for a later date. Details of the charges that Carr faces are under seal. A new hearing date has not been set.

No Monkeypox At Washington Park Elementary

September 25, 2022 2:56 am

Officials with the Washington School District issued a statement on Friday, announcing that test results from four students at Washington Park Elementary School have come back and they were not positive for Monkeypox. Superintendent George Lammay says they now have medical documentation that the four students who were identified with concerning skin rashes do not have monkeypox. Lammay did not disclose exactly what medical condition the students have but said district officials spoke with parents to ensure proper treatment protocols were being followed and district nurses are monitoring the children as well. Lammay issued a letter to parents of students in the elementary school earlier this week notifying them of the potential for Monkeypox and saying the affected students had been removed from classes and all areas had been sanitized.

In GOP Legislatures, A Gender Divide Emerges Over Abortion

September 24, 2022 9:30 am

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – A stark gender divide has emerged in debates unfolding in Republican-led states including West Virginia, Indiana and South Carolina following the U.S. Supreme Court’s June decision to end constitutional protections for abortion. As male-dominated legislatures worked to advance bans, protesters were more likely to be women. That happened even as legislators often had support of the few Republican women holding office. In all three states, lawmakers fighting against abortion bans have pointed to the gender divide. They’ve insisted that male counterparts shouldn’t get to dictate medical decisions for women. Ban supporters maintain that abortion affects not only women, but also children, and all of society.

‘Fighting Fit’: Trial To Show Oath Keepers’ Road To Jan. 6

September 24, 2022 9:28 am

It’s been a long road to the upcoming Capitol riot trial of the the leader of the extremist group Oath Keepers. But the prosecution’s case against Stewart Rhodes covers a lot more than just the insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021. Rhodes and four co-defendants are facing the difficult-to-prove charge of seditious conspiracy. Prosecutors will try to show that for the Oath Keepers, the siege wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment protest but that it was part of a weeks long plot to stop the peaceful transfer of presidential power from election-denier Donald Trump to Joe Biden. Jury selection begins Tuesday in federal court in the nation’s capital. The trial is expected to last several weeks.
