Thousands of runners will take to the streets tomorrow for the annual Pittsburgh Marathon. The 26-mile course runs through many city neighborhoods where storms recently disrupted power and scattered debris along the route. According to our news partners at Channel 11, organizers, city and county leaders all got together for a cleanup effort. Organizers are expecting visitors from all 50 states and 24 countries. More than 46,000 runners are expected to participate this year, making it the largest turnout in the event’s history, according to P3R, the organization responsible for the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon. Earlier this week, many expressed concerns after an unprecedented storm knocked out power, downed electric lines, and uprooted trees across the city just days before the race. The race route is expected to be clear for Sunday morning’s event.

Anthony Albanese has claimed victory as the first Australian prime minister to win a second consecutive term in 21 years. He suggested his government increased its majority in the next Parliament by not modeling itself on U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. Albanese told his supporters in a victory speech in Sydney: “Australians have chosen to face global challenges the Australian way, looking after each other while building for the future.” His center-left Labor Party had branded Albanese’s rival Peter Dutton, the opposition leader, “DOGE-y Dutton” and accused his party of mimicking Trump and his Department of Government Efficiency.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court to strip temporary legal protections from 350,000 Venezuelans, potentially exposing them to being deported. The Justice Department asked the high court Thursday to put on hold a ruling from a federal judge in San Francisco that kept in place Temporary Protected Status that would have otherwise expired last month. A federal appeals court had earlier rejected the administration’s request. President Donald Trump’s administration has moved aggressively to withdraw various protections that have allowed immigrants to remain in the country, including ending TPS for a total of 600,000 Venezuelans and 500,000 Haitians.

Vote counting has begun in Australia’s general election after polling stations closed in Australia’s populous eastern states. The last stations will close two hours later on the west coast, but counting starts immediately after voting ends. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his rival Peter Dutton began campaigning on Saturday in the electorally crucial city of Melbourne. Albanese later returned home to Sydney and Dutton to his hometown of Brisbane to vote. Albanese’s center-left Labor Party is seeking a second three-year term. Dutton wants to become the first opposition leader to oust a first-term government since 1931, when Australians were reeling from the Great Depression.

PITTSBURGH — A crowd funding campaign to help with the medical expenses for the man who fell from the right field stands at PNC Park is garnering funds. Kavan Markwood, 20, fell from the 21-foot high Clemente Wall earlier this week. A family member started the GoFundMe account Friday afternoon and it already has nearly $19,000 in funding. The goal is $35,000. “Please always remember that this individual may be very special to many other people,” wrote the page’s organizer. “Can you imagine what their loved ones are going through and feeling? I know this young man very well and I know that he is very strong but he is also battling for his young life.” Video of the incident shows Markwood celebrating when he fell over the 36-inch high railing and plunged onto the warning track below. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition with reported facial fractures and a leg injury. Police are calling the incident an accident. The South Allegheny School District confirmed Markwood’s identity to our news partners at WPXI on Thursday. He graduated from the district in 2022 and was a standout football player. He also played football at Walsh University and Wheeling University, according to both schools. “The Wheeling University community is heartbroken to hear of the tragedy that occurred at PNC Park involving former Wheeling football player Kavan Markwood,” the university said in a statement. “Kavan is a valued member of our Cardinal family. He played for the football team for the 2023 season after transferring from Walsh University. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kavan, his family, friends and all his loved ones. The Cardinal Family is praying for a full and speedy recovery.” Walsh University also released a statement about the incident on social media. “He is a former student and football player at Walsh University,” the university wrote. “He is in our deepest thoughts and prayers. Lord, please surround him with your healing presence. Restore his body and spirit and ease his suffering.”

A man has pleaded guilty to shooting and killing a man who authorities say tried to stop him from robbing a bank inside the South Strabane Giant Eagle in 2013. Keith Wilk pleaded guilty Friday to killing Vincent Kelley during the robbery. He is sentenced to 20-40 years in prison. Kelley ran after Wilk, who was fleeing the Citizens Bank inside the store. Vincent tackled the robber, which caused the bank dye to explode, before police said Wilk shot and killed him. Around 9 years later, in 2022, Washington County officials said DNA linked Wilk to the case and charges were filed.
