BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — A mentally ill man who killed 10 people at a Colorado supermarket in 2021 has been found guilty of murder and faces life in prison. Jurors reached their verdict Monday in the trial of Ahmad Alissa. His attorneys did not dispute that Alissa, who has schizophrenia, fatally shot 10 people including a police officer in the college town of Boulder. But he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, with the defense arguing he couldn’t tell right from wrong at the time of the attack. In addition to 10 counts of first-degree murder, the jury found Alissa guilty on 38 charges of attempted murder, one count of assault, and six counts of possessing illegal, large-capacity magazines.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A search is underway for the shooters who killed four people and injured 17 others in a weekend shooting at a popular nightspot in Birmingham, Alabama. Police say victims were caught in the crossfire during the shooting shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday. Authorities say they believe the shooting was a paid hit on one of the victims. They did not report any immediate arrests the day after the attack. A news conference has been planned for Monday morning. The shooting was one of several this year in the major city of Birmingham and left city officials pleading for help to both solve the crime and address the broader problem of gun violence.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Violent crime in the US dropped again in 2023, according to FBI statistics that show a continued trend downward after a coronavirus pandemic-era crime spike. The report released Monday shows overall violent crime ticked down an estimated 3% in 2023 from the year before. Murders and non-negligent manslaughter dropped nearly 12%. Violent crime has become a talking point on the campaign trail, with former President Donald Trump falsely claiming during the recent presidential debate that crime is “through the roof” under President Joe Biden’s administration. Even amid the 2020 surge, violent crime is down dramatically from the 1990s.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military is calling on residents of southern Lebanon to immediately evacuate homes and other buildings where it claims Hezbollah stores weapons. Israel says it is carrying out “extensive strikes” against the militant group. Monday’s warning was the first of its kind in nearly a year of steadily escalating conflict and came after a particularly heavy exchange of fire the day before. Hezbollah launched around 150 rockets, missiles and drones into northern Israel in retaliation for recent strikes that killed a top commander and dozens of fighters.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Donald Trump has returned to North Carolina to stump in the southern battleground state that both Democrats and Republicans are treating as increasingly critical to victory in November. But on Saturday he campaigned in Wilmington without Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson. Trump has long praised the GOP gubernatorial nominee, but his campaign is now distancing itself following a CNN report about Robinson’s alleged posts on a pornography website’s message board. Robinson has denied writing the posts and says he’s not leaving the race. State Republican officials have stood by Robinson, whose decision to keep campaigning could threaten GOP prospects in other key races, including Trump’s efforts in a battleground state he previously won twice.

In statements Saturday, spokespeople for the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland confirmed that authorities have boarded the Maersk Saltoro. The ship is managed by Synergy Marine Group. Authorities didn’t offer further specifics. On Wednesday, the U.S. Justice Department sued owner Grace Ocean Private Ltd. and manager Synergy Marine Group of the Dali ship that crashed into a support column for the Francis Scott Key Bridge in March. The department is seeking $100 million.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco’s sidewalks once notorious for sprawling tents belonging to homeless people are largely clear. There are still thousands of homeless people living in RVs and cars and in expanded shelter beds. But Mayor London Breed’s office says the nearly 3,000 people counted sleeping outdoors in tents is the lowest figure in a decade. And even fewer people are likely living on sidewalks after Breed ramped up enforcement of anti-camping laws following a U.S. Supreme Court decision this summer. Part of the decrease in tents is also due to San Francisco adding thousands of new shelter beds and affordable housing units. Other California cities also are seeing fewer tents.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — It’s not a great moment in world affairs right now. The world is fragmented. Conflicts and crises are raging. It’s against this backdrop that world leaders are attending this week’s annual U.N. gathering. Antonio Guterres, the head of the United Nations, is challenging them to work together not just on all the problems but on modernizing international institutions to prepare for the future. Guterres is leading a “Summit of the Future” over the next couple days to tackle that. The U.N. chief told reporters last week that international challenges are many and varied and are moving faster than our ability to solve them.
