WEST CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — Hundreds of law enforcement agents are searching for a man convicted of murder in Pennsylvania for the fatal stabbing of his ex-girlfriend, a day after he escaped from a county jail. The search continued Friday for Danelo Cavalcante, who prosecutors say is an extremely dangerous person and is also wanted in his native Brazil in a separate slaying. The search involves drones, helicopters and dogs. Chester County’s district attorney, Deb Ryan, says searchers are focusing on railways, waterways and routes out of the area. Authorities didn’t disclose the circumstances of his escape, but say the matter is under investigation.

Washington County District Attorney Jason Walsh says three people have formally been charged in connection with a drive by shooting in Canonsburg on July 23. Two of the suspects were taken into custody in the City of Washington early Friday morning. Walsh says multiple agencies were involved, including the District Attorney Drug Task Force, Sheriff’s Department, and Washington County Regional SWAT. 31 year old Dillon Britt was taken into custody along Church Street while 30 year old Brett Carroll was apprehended at a residence along Walnut Street. The third person arrested is Jessica Chatman-Carroll of Houston. The District Attorney says Britt and Carroll are known felons who are not permitted to possess firearms. The shooting occurred at a home in the 500-block of Perry Como Street. According to the affidavit of probable cause, there were 21 bullet impact points on the residence. There were three people inside the home at the time including a six-year old girl. Witnesses identified a grey minivan going past the home and firing shots. Surveillance footage from near the scene showed all three in the vehicle with Chatman-Carroll identified as the driver. According to the criminal complaint, Chatman-Carroll admitted to being the driver and even bragged about it. Walsh says all three are charged with Criminal Attempt Homicide, Aggravated Assault, and related offenses. Preliminary hearing dates had not yet been scheduled.

Young students who were hit hardest by the pandemic are entering the upper grades of elementary school. Many will need extra reading support that schools aren’t used to providing for older children. The students who were just starting school when the world shut down in 2020 showed some of the most alarming delays in their ability to read. To help them catch up, schools deployed a wide range of strategies. And among some incoming fourth-graders, there are encouraging signs of gains. But now that they’re big kids, will they get the same help? Experts say few upper-grade teachers know how to build foundational reading skills.

HONOLULU (AP) — The number of people on the official list of those missing from the Maui wildfire stands at 385, nearly unchanged from a week earlier. In a news release Friday, the Maui Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation said 245 people on the list of 388 made public the previous week were located and removed from the list. However, a nearly equal number of new names were added. The updated total was a startling departure from what had been expected — a day earlier Gov. Josh Green said he expected the number would fall below 100.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is heading to Florida for a firsthand look at Hurricane Idalia’s destruction. But he won’t be seeing the state’s Republican governor and 2024 presidential hopeful, Ron DeSantis, who suggested such a meeting could hinder disaster response efforts. Idalia made landfall Wednesday morning along Florida’s sparsely populated Big Bend region as a Category 3 storm, causing widespread flooding and damage before moving north to drench Georgia and the Carolinas. But Biden’s visit to see its effects threatened to be engulfed by politics. That’s because DeSantis’ statement Friday saying he had “no plans” to see the president during his Florida trip came hours after Biden himself said he would be meeting with the governor.

HARRISBURG, Pa. –(WPXI)- A state senator is proposing legislation that would eliminate the state’s annual vehicle safety inspections, arguing that the requirement is “excessive” and “unnecessary.” Drivers and mechanics who spoke with Channel 11 on Friday, however, find the proposal concerning. This week, Senator Marty Flynn, a Democrat representing parts of Northeast Pennsylvania, unveiled plans to change the legal requirement so that drivers would only need to inspect a vehicle when it’s sold or the title is transferred. Senator Flynn, in his memorandum, cites a 2015 report that found “the value” of annual inspections “hard to quantify.” He notes that only 14 states still require annual safety inspections. His memorandum states that inspections don’t financially benefit the state’s Motor License Fund, which “is in dire need of additional funding.” While proposing to do away with the inspection requirement, he is proposing a new $15 registration fee for drivers instead, which would generate money for the state. Flynn calls it a “win-win” for drivers and Pennsylvania’s infrastructure.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s employers added a healthy 187,000 jobs in August in a sign of a still-resilient labor market despite the high interest rates the Federal Reserve has imposed. The job increase marked an increase from July’s revised gain of 157,000 but still pointed to a moderating pace of job growth compared with earlier this year. The unemployment rate rose from 3.5% to 3.8%, the highest level since Feb. 2022 though still low by historical standards. A decelerating job market could help shift the economy into a slower gear and reassure the Federal Reserve that inflation will continue to decelerate.

ATLANTA (AP) — In the final hours before Hurricane Idalia struck Florida, experts say its eye experienced a phenomenon that kept it from further intensifying. Just after came another twist: A last-minute turn sparing the state’s capital city of Tallahassee from far more serious devastation. Idalia had grown into a Category 4 monster lurking off Florida’s west coast before dawn Wednesday, and the forecast called for it to continue intensifying up until landfall. But as the sun rose an hour later, there was evidence the hurricane began replacing the wall around its eye — and maximum winds had dropped to near 125 mph.

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii is opening several investigations into people who allegedly have made unsolicited offers for property in the fire-stricken town of Lahaina in violation of a new emergency order. Gov. Josh Green prohibited such offers by signing an emergency proclamation on Aug. 19 aimed at preventing land in the historic coastal community from flowing into the hands of outside buyers. Green told The Associated Press the order aims to give residents some “breathing room” as they decide what to do next. Earlier this month Green said he wanted to impose a moratorium on Lahaina land sales. He says the prohibition on unsolicited offers is a “de facto” moratorium.

Russian officials say air defenses intercepted drones heading toward three of the country’s western regions. Meanwhile, satellite images indicate that a major drone barrage earlier this week destroyed at least two Ilyushin Il-76 military transport planes at a Russian air base. Regional governors said Friday that defense systems stopped three drones in the Kursk, Belgorod and Moscow regions. Moscow airports briefly halted flights but Russian authorities reported no major damage or injuries. Drones aimed at targets inside Russia — and blamed by Moscow on Ukraine — have become a daily occurrence as the war has entered its 19th month and Kyiv’s forces pursue a counteroffensive. The drones have reached deeper into Russia recently.
