Fetterman Agrees To One Televised Debate With Mehmet Oz

September 15, 2022 1:20 am

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Democratic Senate candidate John Fetterman of Pennsylvania says he has agreed to an Oct. 25 televised debate against his Republican rival, Dr. Mehmet Oz. The debate, coming two weeks before the general election, follows weeks of cajoling by Oz. He has raised questions about the severity of Fetterman’s lingering effects from a May stroke and pushed for as many as seven debates. The debate will be held in the studio of a Harrisburg TV station. Oz’s campaign says Fetterman agreed to the debate only “after being hit with massive criticism from state and national editorials and commentators for ducking.”

Two Homes Destroyed After New Eagle Fire

September 15, 2022 1:17 am

NEW EAGLE, Pa. (WPXI) — A Washington County couple is starting over after a fire destroyed their home of 30 years. Carole Leach and her husband lived along Wood Street in New Eagle. The Leaches own two houses next door to each other. One of them is unoccupied and that’s the home that caught fire first. New Eagle Fire Chief Paul Pro says the homeowner was burning weeds with a torch and went inside and that is when the blaze started. Witnesses at the scene say the first house was completely engulfed by flames. Nearby homes were also damaged by the heat from the fire.  The unoccupied house had no utilities and was primarily used for storage and recreation. That home burned to the ground. The other home will be condemned and demolished. Chief Pro says eight departments and 60 firefighters were needed to fight the blaze. The Red Cross is helping and the Leach family says they are working on a fundraiser for the couple. (Photo:  WPXI)

GOP Unveils Nationwide Abortion Ban

September 14, 2022 3:28 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham has introduced a bill calling for a nationwide abortion ban. The bill would prohibit abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, except in cases of rape, incest or danger to the physical health of the mother. The legislation introduced Tuesday is sending shockwaves through both parties with just weeks before voters go to the polls. Graham’s own Republican colleagues did not immediately embrace his abortion ban bill, which has almost no chance of becoming law in the Democratic-held Congress. Democrats reject it as extreme and an alarming signal of where Republicans are headed if they win control of the House and Senate in November.

Queen Elizabeth Has Left Buckingham Palace

September 14, 2022 3:27 am

LONDON (AP) – Queen Elizabeth II has left Buckingham Palace for the last time, her casket borne to Westminster Hall by a horse-drawn gun carriage in a somber procession. Her son, King Charles III, and his siblings and sons marched behind the coffin, which was topped by a wreath of white roses and her crown resting on a purple velvet pillow. At Westminster Hall, crowds shuffled in two lines past her coffin well into the night. Many bowed and some were in tears. Hundreds of thousands expected to pay their respects. The queen will lie in state until her funeral on Monday.

U.S. Inflation Grows More Persistent

September 14, 2022 3:24 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. inflation is showing signs of entering a more stubborn phase that will likely require drastic action by the Federal Reserve, a shift that has panicked financial markets and heightens the risks of a recession. Some of the longtime drivers of higher inflation — spiking gas prices, supply chain snarls, soaring used-car prices — are fading. Yet underlying measures of inflation are actually worsening. And the ongoing evolution of the forces behind an inflation rate that’s near a four-decade high has made it harder for the Fed to wrestle it under control.

Pandemic, Labor Shortage Hurting Hurricane Victims

September 14, 2022 3:23 am

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Nearly six years after extreme rainfall and flooding from Hurricane Matthew damaged many North Carolina homes, some homeowners are still left waiting on repairs. Some residents have spent years in motels or other temporary housing accommodations while a North Carolina agency makes slow progress spending federal funds for long-term hurricane recovery. A new bipartisan General Assembly committee investigating the delays holds its first meeting Wednesday on the four-year anniversary of when Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina. Co-Chair Rep. John Bell’s district along the Neuse River incurred some of the worst flooding damage statewide. He said he’s seeking accountability on behalf of his displaced constituents.

Biden Touts Electric Vehicles At Detroit Car Show

September 14, 2022 3:22 am

DETROIT (AP) – President Joe Biden spent a good portion of his day Wednesday showcasing his administration’s efforts to promote electric vehicles at the Detroit auto show. Biden is a self-proclaimed “car guy” who owns a 1967 Corvette Stingray. He got behind the wheel of a snazzy new Corvette at the show amid jokes that he might drive it back to Washington. But he journeyed to the auto show mostly to highlight the new climate, tax and health care law that offers tax incentives for buying electric vehicles. He announced approval of the first $900 million in infrastructure money to build EV chargers across 53,000 miles of the national highway system.

Forty-five-year-old Martell Smith faces three counts of homicide as well as aggravated arson and other charges. Allegheny County prosecutors say he set the early morning blaze in December 2017 after getting into a bar fight with another man. The Tribune-Review reports that his attorney said the fight was brief and his client had no motive, but prosecutors say the fight left him bloody and that after the fire, witnesses reported hearing him brag about what he had done.

California Couple Charged With Child Endangerment

September 14, 2022 3:08 am

CALIFORNIA BOROUGH, Pa. — A California Borough couple is accused of giving liquor to 14-year-olds and letting them play with a loaded gun. Jeremy and Trisha Jackson are facing multiple child endangerment charges. Police were called to their Pennsylvania Avenue home Saturday just before 6 p.m. Video evidence shows them passing around a bottle of tequila, Jeremy Jackson taking a gun off his hip and handing it to a young teen. The teens then take turns pointing the gun at the street and even toward each other. Police say Trisha resisted arrest, screaming that she would kill the 911 caller. She also tried to kick out the police cruiser windows. Police feared she would be injured and then pepper-sprayed her to subdue her. The police chief says this is the beginning of a much bigger investigation, and more charges are expected. (Photo: WPXI)
