LOS ANGELES (AP) – Rapper PnB Rock was fatally shot during a robbery at a South Los Angeles restaurant where police believe a social media post may have tipped the assailant to his location. The Philadelphia artist, whose real name is Rakim Allen, was gunned down Monday at a Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles restaurant while eating with his girlfriend. Los Angeles police say the shooter approached their table and demanded items. A verbal exchange ended when the robber opened fire, striking the rapper multiple times. Police Chief Michel Moore told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday that police are investigating whether a social media post by the rapper’s girlfriend prompted the attack.  (Photo:  ABC News)

September 13, 2022 3:28 am

CHICAGO (AP) — A 21-year-old sailor is being laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery more than 80 years after he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Scientific testing that started in 2015 on remains of men whose bodies were pulled from the USS Oklahoma after the attack has led to the identification of Herbert “Bert” Jacobson and more than 350 others. The service scheduled for Tuesday ends decades of questions from survivors of the sailor from Grayslake, Illinois. Nephew Brad McDonald says the burial will give his family closure, knowing “where he is and that he’s being finally laid to rest after being listed as an unknown for so long.”

A Winner’s Joy Lifts Emmy Night

September 13, 2022 3:26 am

Sheryl Lee Ralph was already in tears on the pre-show red carpet, when presented with a video of support from a beloved aunt. But then came her victory as best supporting actress in a comedy. In the feel-good moment of the night, the 66-year-old first time winner sang the opening of an empowering song, “Endangered Species.” It was an Emmy show that rewarded previous winners in several major categories: “Succession” and “Ted Lasso,” the big winners in drama and comedy, were repeat winners, as were a number of actors. Still, there were new and groundbreaking wins like that of actor Lee Jung-jae of “Squid Game,” the first Asian to win the award.

Seoul Says N. Korea Will Self-Destruct If It Uses Nukes

September 13, 2022 3:24 am

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea has warned North Korea’s government that using its nuclear weapons would put it on a “path of self-destruction.” It says recent legislation in North Korea allowing the preemptive use of its bombs would only prompt Seoul and Washington to bolster their joint military capabilities. The rhetoric from Seoul risks angering North Korea and could further deepen animosities between the rivals. South Korea has typically shunned harsh language to avoid tensions on the Korean Peninsula. South Korea’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday that South Korea will sharply boost its own preemptive attack plans, missile defense and massive retaliation capabilities while seeking a greater U.S. security commitment.

Rain & Mudslides Prompt California Evacuations

September 13, 2022 3:23 am

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Heavy rains unleashed mudslides in a mountain area east of Los Angeles that burned two years ago, sending boulders and other debris across roads and prompting evacuation and shelter-in-place orders for thousands of residents. Firefighters went street by street in the community of Forest Falls Monday to make sure no residents were trapped. Crews hadn’t found anyone who needed to be rescued and no one was reported missing. The rains were the remnants of a tropical storm that brought high winds and some badly needed rainfall to drought-stricken Southern California last week, helping firefighters largely corral a wildfire that had been burning out of control about 20 miles south of the mudslides.

West Virginia Passes Sweeping Abortion Bill

September 13, 2022 3:10 am

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – West Virginia’s Legislature has passed a sweeping abortion ban with few exceptions. Several Republicans, whose party holds a supermajority, say they hope the bill approved Tuesday will make it impossible for the state’s only abortion clinic to continue to offer the procedure. Under the legislation, rape and incest victims would be able to obtain abortions at up to eight weeks of pregnancy, but only if they report to law enforcement first. Such victims who are minors would have until 14 weeks to terminate a pregnancy and must report to either law enforcement or a physician. Abortions also would be allowed in cases of medical emergencies.
