September 11, 2022 8:00 am

LONDON (AP) — Queen Elizabeth II’s flag-draped coffin is passing through the rugged Scottish countryside on a final journey from her beloved summer estate Balmoral Castle to London. The coffin of the late monarch is on a six-hour road journey to Edinburgh on Sunday. Mourners in Scotland are lining roads and some tossing flowers to honor the monarch who died Thursday at Balmoral after 70 years on the throne. Also Sunday, King Charles III will be formally proclaimed king in the other nations of the United Kingdom — Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland — after a similar ceremony in Britain a day earlier.

Biden To Honor 9/11 Victims Sunday

September 11, 2022 7:59 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden will mark the 21st anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks at the Pentagon. Sunday’s somber commemoration comes a little more than a year after the Democratic president ended the war in Afghanistan launched by the U.S. and its allies in response to the terror attacks. Biden upheld a campaign pledge to bring home U.S. troops from the country’s longest conflict. But the war ended in chaotic fashion last August as the U.S.-backed Afghan government collapsed. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby says Biden will recognize the impact the Sept. 11 attacks had on the U.S. and the world and honor the nearly 3,000 people killed that day.

U.S. Marks 21st Anniversary Of 9/11

September 11, 2022 7:58 am

NEW YORK (AP) — Americans are remembering 9/11 with moments of silence, readings of victims’ names, volunteer work and other tributes, 21 years after the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil. Victims’ relatives and dignitaries will convene Sunday at the places where hijacked jets crashed on Sept. 11, 2001. President Joe Biden plans to speak and lay a wreath at the Pentagon, while first lady Jill Biden is scheduled to speak in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband are due at the World Trade Center in New York, but by tradition, no political figures speak at the ground zero ceremony. Other communities around the country are holding their own commemorations. Locally, the South Strabane Police and Fire Departments held their annual service in front of the memorial at the Washington Mall parking lot Sunday morning.

Trump, DOJ Make Separate Suggestions For Records Special Master

September 10, 2022 3:48 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Justice Department and Donald Trump’s legal team have proposed candidates to serve as an independent arbiter in the investigation into top-secret information found in an FBI search of the former president’s Florida home. Lawyers for Trump say the so-called special master should review all documents seized by the FBI, but the Justice Department says it does not believe the arbiter should be permitted to inspect classified records or to take into account potential claims of executive privilege. The Justice Department submitted the names of two retired judges, Barbara Jones and Thomas Griffith. The Trump team proposed one retired judge, Raymond Dearie, and prominent Florida lawyer Paul Huck Jr.

Ukraine Makes Gains In North

September 10, 2022 3:47 am

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – Ukrainian forces are claiming new success in their counteroffensive against Russian forces in the east, taking control of a sizeable village and pushing toward an important transport junction. The United States’ top diplomat and the head of NATO noted the advances, but cautioned that the war is likely to drag on for months. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commended the military for its gains, saying that more than 30 settlements in the Kharkiv region have been reclaimed. The head of the U.N. atomic watchdog, meanwhile, says conditions at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant are increasingly precarious. He says a safety zone needs to be established immediately around the plant to prevent a nuclear accident.

Mourners Flock To Buckingham Palace To Remember Queen

September 10, 2022 3:46 am

LONDON (AP) – Mourners streamed to the gates of Buckingham Palace in London to mourn a queen they lost this week after she spent 70 years on the throne. But beyond its size, the pilgrimage was remarkable for what it underscored – the many roles that visitors said the monarch occupied in the lives of those she could never know. Flowers, notes and tributes dotted the landscape around the palace on the day that Queen Elizabeth’s son, Charles, first addressed the nation as king. And those who brought the memorials in miniature each told a different story about their relationship with their queen. They called her a role model, a dutiful leader and – in recent years – a national grandmother.
