LAS VEGAS (AP) – Investigative reporter Jeff German took on the powerful in four decades of writing about the Las Vegas underworld and government corruption. But police say it was one of his latest targets, a county administrator, who fatally stabbed German last weekend. The killing came months after German had written about bullying, favoritism and an inappropriate relationship within an obscure public office. Authorities said Thursday that DNA at the crime scene linked Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles to the killing. Police arrested him Wednesday after a brief standoff at his home. Telles was the focus of German’s reporting in the Las Vegas Review-Journal as he sought reelection.

September 9, 2022 4:15 am

LONDON (AP) – Britain’s new king is preparing to meet with the prime minister and plans to address a nation mourning Queen Elizabeth II. The queen was only British monarch most of the world had known and was a force of stability in a volatile age. The country began a 10-day mourning period Friday. Bells tolled around Britain and 96 gun salutes were planned in London. That’s one for each year of the queen’s long life. People around the globe gathered at British embassies to pay homage to the queen. She died Thursday in Scotland. King Charles III spent much of his 73 years preparing for the role and takes the throne in an era of uncertainty for both his country and the monarchy itself.

Fetterman Agrees To Debate

September 9, 2022 4:10 am

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Democratic Senate candidate John Fetterman of Pennsylvania will participate in just one debate, his campaign said Wednesday, after weeks of his Republican rival, Dr. Mehmet Oz, pressuring Fetterman and aggressively questioning the severity of his lingering health problems from a stroke. Fetterman’s campaign said he will participate in a televised debate in mid- to late October. The campaign gave no other details, including why he would agree to just one debate. Oz’s campaign immediately dubbed it a “secret debate,” with no details on when or where. Politico was first to report that Fetterman had agreed to one debate. As the general election grows closer, Oz, a celebrity heart surgeon and political novice, has begun stepping up his questioning of Fetterman’s fitness for office after he suffered the stroke in May. Fetterman’s campaign has said Oz was operating in bad faith by insisting on debates and said his motivations were really “about mocking John for having a stroke.”  Fetterman, the state’s lieutenant governor, and Oz are vying to replace retiring Republican Sen. Pat Toomey in a race Democrats see as one of their best chances nationally to flip a Republican-held seat. The winner in the battleground state could help decide the chamber’s partisan control next year.

Chamber Of Commerce Talks Revitalization

September 9, 2022 2:21 am

The Washington County Chamber of Commerce held their Breakfast Briefing at the new ARC Human Services Building in Canonsburg. The topic of the day was the revitalization of downtown areas in Washington County. Three panelists took part in a discussion of how they have managed a rebirth of activity in their downtown areas. Shana Brown, Main Street Manager of the Washington Business District Authority stated that having “skin in the game” as a resident of her city helps her fill gaps in services and helps her bring in businesses that fill those needs. Terry Necciai, Executive Director of the Monongahela Main Street Program points to community pride and responsibility as a key driver in his community. Over the last several years Monongahela has garnered an increase of 35 new businesses in its business district. Necciai credits a minimum of absentee landlords and a wealth of local ownership of buildings that allow store owners to be confident to open their stores knowing that their needs will be met appropriately. Lisa Scarmazzi, Director of Economic Development in Canonsburg has found that not only creating an atmosphere of cooperation among business owners in her town’s revitalization breeds success, it also breeds a sense of community pride. She stated at a recent council meeting that she now is fielding calls from residents asking how they can become more involved in making Canonsburg the type of community that will thrive into the future. All three panelists credited grant programs, especially LSA grant programs for successes in their towns. Grants from the LSA board have allowed building owners to make significant upgrades to buildings through the Building Façade Improvement Program.
