September 8, 2022 4:04 am

Washington County held its final open house for public comment on its new Comprehensive Plan. Planning Director Lisa Cessna states that the original comprehensive plan was adopted in 2005. Several components to the plan were included throughout the last 17 years. This plan is now in the finalization phase where comments from residents and several professional categories will be condensed and written into what Cessna calls a “playbook” for county commissioners to use to aid them in the development and redevelopment of Washington County. Several criteria were available for public comment. County Assets like tourism, history, recreation and rivers; internet broadband; transportation and areas of revitalization were staffed for suggestions from the public. County infrastructure and natural resources were also topics available for public comment. Residents are still able to view the comprehensive plan and comment by visiting the Washington County website and finding it listed under the planning department. Cessna indicated that she is looking for everyone’s input to make Washington County the county in which they would love to live.

September 7, 2022 4:07 pm

UPERTINO, Calif. (AP) – Apple revealed its next line-up of iPhones will boast better cameras, faster processors, and a longer lasting battery at the same prices as last year’s model, despite the mounting pressures of inflation that has driven up the cost of other everyday items. The decision to hold the line of iPhone prices came as a mild surprise, as most analysts had predicted Apple would likely ask its devout fans to pay as much as 15% more to help offset the rising costs for many components. The four new models, with starting prices ranging from $799 to $1,099, will be in stores beginning Sept. 16.

Old Michigan Abortion Law Struck Down

September 7, 2022 2:36 pm

(AP) A judge has struck down Michigan’s 1931 anti-abortion law, months after suspending it last spring. Judge Elizabeth Gleicher of the Court of Claims said the law violates the Michigan Constitution. It was long dormant before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June. The 1931 law makes it a crime to perform abortions unless the life of the mother is in danger. Separately, the Michigan Supreme Court is considering whether to place a proposed amendment on the Nov. 8 ballot that would add abortion rights to the Michigan Constitution. Supporters submitted more than 700,000 signatures, easily clearing the threshold. But a tie vote by the Board of State Canvassers over spacing issues on the petition has kept it off the ballot so far.

Colorful flags hung inside the hallways, and teachers wore turquoise shirts that read “Together We Rise & Together We Are Better” on the back. State troopers were parked on every corner outside the school. The district announced in late June that the scene of the assault, Robb Elementary, would be permanently closed.

Trump-Backed Diehl Claims GOP Nomination

September 7, 2022 4:19 am

BOSTON (AP) – A former state representative endorsed by former President Donald Trump, Geoff Diehl, has won the Republican nomination for Massachusetts governor over a businessman, Chris Doughty, who was considered the more moderate candidate in the race. Diehl will face Democrat Maura Healey, now the state’s attorney general. She would be the first openly gay person and the first woman elected governor of Massachusetts if she wins. The state’s current governor, Republican Charlie Baker, decided against seeking a third term. Republican voters made Massachusetts the latest blue state to nominate a Trump loyalist in a high-profile race, potentially dooming the party’s chances of winning in November.
