Asylum Seekers Caught In Political Battle

August 23, 2022 4:23 am

NEW YORK (AP) – Thousands of asylum seekers from across Latin America and the Caribbean are getting caught in the political battle over U.S. immigration policy after two Republican governors started sending busloads of migrants to New York City and Washington. Border cities such as San Diego have long wrestled with influxes of asylum-seekers and created well-oiled machines to respond. But the nation’s largest city and its capital were caught flat-footed. That created an opening for Greg Abbott of Texas and Doug Ducey of Arizona. Nearly 8,000 migrants have arrived on the state-sponsored bus trips, straining the resources and humanitarian services of both cities, which have also sought assistance from the federal government.

The poll found 71% of Americans say gun laws should be stricter, including about half of Republicans and a majority of those in gun-owning households.

Trump Seeks Special Master To Review Documents

August 23, 2022 4:19 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – Lawyers for former President Donald Trump have asked a federal judge to prevent the FBI from continuing to review documents recovered from his Florida estate until a neutral special master can be appointed. The attorneys asserted Monday in a court filing, their first since the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago two weeks ago, that the sets of documents taken from the residence were “presumptively” covered by executive privilege. They say the matter has captured the attention of the American public and safeguards are needed to protect Trump’s constitutional rights. The filing casts the August 8 search as a “shockingly aggressive move.”

MIAMI (AP) – Florida governor and Republican powerhouse Ron DeSantis will learn the identity of his general election opponent after Tuesday’s primary voting. In New York, congressional primaries include a race between two powerful Democratic committee chairs, Carolyn Maloney and Jerry Nadler, and other incumbents fending off challenges from the left.

Man Charged With Poisoning Attempt At Sports Bar

August 23, 2022 4:15 am

PITTSBURGH — (WPXI) – A local man is facing charges after police said he put heavy duty degreaser in his coworker’s drink while working at a Pittsburgh sports bar. The alleged poisoning attempt happened at Red Beards Sports Bar at 144 6th Street in downtown Pittsburgh. According to the criminal complaint, the manager of Red Beards walked into the Zone Two police station to report that one of his employees was possibly harmed by another employee. The victim told police that he normally drinks a lot of water during his shift but was drinking strawberry tea on the day of the incident, according to the complaint. The complaint also said the victim told police he left his drink in a holder at his work station and had left the station to possibly go outside. He noticed the drink smelled and tasted differently and had little white bubbles when he got back. He spit out the drink and dumped the rest of it after that. The drink left the victim’s lips burning, the criminal complaint said. The victim asked the manager to check security footage to see if anyone tampered with his drink. When the manager looked at the security video, he saw another employee, identified as Gregory Evans, pouring heavy duty degreaser into a cup and then dumping the liquid from that cup into the victim’s drink, said court documents. Evans is facing multiple charges, including criminal attempt homicide, various aggravated assault charges, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
