JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israel-Hamas war has quickly shattered many records when it comes to the history of conflicts between the bitter enemies. It’s the deadliest, the most destructive, and the longest. Israel has razed large swaths of the Gaza Strip, where researchers assess that nearly half of all buildings are likely damaged or destroyed. Nearly 24,000 people in the Gaza Strip have been killed, which amounts to more than 1% of Gaza’s population. Meanwhile, the Hamas attack on Israel that spurred the war was the single deadliest day in Israeli history.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The White House says “it’s the right time” for Israel to scale back its military offensive in the Gaza Strip, even as Israeli leaders vow to intensify their operation against the territory’s ruling Hamas militant group. The U.S. comments on Sunday exposed the growing differences between the close allies on the 100th day of the war. Also Sunday, Israeli warplanes struck targets in Lebanon following a Hezbollah missile attack in northern Israel that killed two Israeli civilians — an older woman and her adult son. The exchange of fire underscored concerns that the Gaza violence could trigger wider fighting across the region.

WASHINGTON, Pa. — City of Washington Police are renewing a push to solve several homicides from the past decade. The Department posted on Facebook that it continues to investigate the murders of Matthew “Miz” McGlone (October 2014), Marius “Pryce” Chatman (March 2015), Travis Larson (November 2017) and Connor Brock (November 2021). Police say their killers are still at large. Newly elected Washington Mayor Jojo Burgess said he hand-picked the new police chief who is working to solve these cases. Our news partners at Channel 11 say investigators have said repeatedly people have information that could solve the cases but aren’t coming forward. “One thing needs to change. This so-called ‘code of the streets, I’m no snitch.’ There are families out there hurting because of people doing bad things. We live in Washington PA, we are not in the big city like some of these guys think, with their little gangs, we are in Little Washington for a reason. We want to be a tightknit town.” Anyone with information on these cases can contact Washington police at (724) 223-4226. You can also message them on their Facebook page.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Forecasters say brutally cold weather could prove a deadly challenge this weekend as a continuing wave of Arctic storms hammers much of the country with blinding snow, freezing rain and whipping winds. Governors from New York to Louisiana have declared states of emergency ahead of predicted snow and subzero temperatures. In St. Louis, the National Weather Service warned of rare and “life-threatening” cold. The fierce weather has forced GOP presidential nominees to shuffle their schedules in Iowa, the leadoff caucus state. And near-record cold in Kansas City will make for a frigid NFL playoff game Saturday night, when the Chiefs host Miami. In Chicago, authorities say a man died of exposure on Thursday in a suburb.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Just a few months after he took office, Attorney General Merrick Garland issued a moratorium to halt federal executions — a stark contrast after his predecessor carried out 13 in six months. Under Garland’s watch and a president who vowed to abolish the death penalty, the Justice Department took on no new death penalty cases. That changed Friday as federal prosecutors said they would seek capital punishment for a white supremacist who killed 10 Black people at a Buffalo supermarket. The decision doesn’t change the halt on federal executions, but Garland’s first approval of a new capital prosecution opens a new chapter in the long and complicated history of the death penalty in the U.S.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military has struck another Houthi-controlled site in Yemen that it had determined was putting commercial vessels in the Red Sea at risk. That’s according to a statement released by U.S. Central Command. The first day of strikes on Friday hit 28 locations and struck more than 60 targets, and President Joe Biden had warned that the Houthis could face further strikes. U.S. Central Command says the “follow-on action” early Saturday local time against a Houthi radar site was conducted by the Navy destroyer USS Carney using Tomahawk land attack missiles. Associated Press journalists in Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, heard one loud explosion.

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a new twist in the abortion access fight, congressional Republicans are trying to block a Biden administration spending rule that they say will cut off millions of dollars to anti-abortion counseling centers. The rule would prohibit states from sending federal funds earmarked for needy Americans to so-called “crisis pregnancy centers,” which counsel against abortions. Millions in federal funding currently flow to the organizations through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, a 1996 block grant program created to give cash assistance to poor children and prevent out-of-wedlock pregnancies. Republicans have introduced legislation to block the Health and Human Services Department from restricting funds for the centers, though it has no chance of becoming law this year.
