Donald Trump is pushing for his federal election interference trial in Washington to be televised. He’s joining media outlets that say the American public should be able to watch the historic case unfold. Federal court rules prohibit broadcasting proceedings. But The Associated Press and other news organizations say the unprecedented case of a former president standing trial on accusations that he tried to subvert the will of voters warrants making an exception. The Justice Department argues that the judge overseeing the case doesn’t have the authority to ignore the long-standing nationwide policy against cameras in federal courtrooms. Trump said during a campaign rally Saturday, “I want this trial to be seen by everybody in the world.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Mike Johnson has unveiled his proposal to avoid a partial government shutdown next weekend by extending government funding for some agencies and programs until Jan. 19 and continuing funding for others until Feb. 2. The approach is unusual for a stopgap spending bill. Generally, lawmakers extend funding until a certain date for all programs. Johnson decided to go with the combination approach, addressing concerns from GOP lawmakers who want to avoid being presented with a massive spending bill just before the holidays, as has often occurred in the past.

ROME (AP) — Pope Francis has removed from office the bishop of Tyler, Texas. Bishop Joseph Strickland is a conservative who is active on social media and has been a fierce critic of the pontiff and some of his priorities. A one-line statement from the Vatican says Francis has “relieved” Strickland of the pastoral governance of Tyler and appointed the bishop of Austin as the temporary administrator. Strickland has emerged as a critic of Francis, in particular of his recent meeting on the future of the Catholic Church. Earlier this year, the Vatican sent in investigators to look into Strickland’s governance of the diocese, amid reports he was making doctrinally unorthodox claims.

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli strikes have pounded Gaza City as ground forces battle Hamas militants near its largest hospital. Health officials say thousands of medics, patients and displaced people are trapped in Shifa Hospital with no electricity and dwindling supplies. Another hospital, Al-Quds, shut down. Israel’s military says there is a safe corridor for civilians out of Shifa to southern Gaza and that it would assist in moving babies on Sunday. In a televised address, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected growing calls for a cease-fire unless it includes the release of all 239 hostages captured by Hamas in the Oct. 7 rampage that triggered the war. Israel has come under mounting international pressure even from its closest ally, the United States, as the war enters a sixth week.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States and China are the two global economic heavyweights. Combined, they produce more than 40% of the world’s goods and services. So when Washington and Beijing do economic battle, as they have for five years running, the rest of the world suffers, too. And when they hold a rare high-level summit, as Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping will this week, it can have global consequences. The world’s economy could surely benefit from a U.S.-China détente. Since 2020, it’s suffered one crisis after another — the COVID-19 pandemic, soaring inflation, surging interest rates, violent conflicts. Hopes have risen that Washington and Beijing can at least cool some of their economic tensions at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

(WPXI)-An eight page federal lawsuit has been filed against a UPMC Police officer. The suit alleges that the officer punched a patient several times in the face and then lied about it in December of 2022. Initially, charges were brought against the patient David Drews. They were dismissed and UPMC Police Officer Chris Cicchitto was eventually charged. The incident was captured on video. It shows Drews suffering a seizure due to a bi-polar disorder and was being transported to Western Psychiatric Hospital. Drews called the officer names prompting him to sucker punch Drews. Cicchitto is now being sued for excessive force, malicious prosecution, false arrest and other claims. UPMC is not named in the lawsuit and would not verify if Cicchitto is still employed there.
