WASHINGTON — (WPXI)- An event will be held in Washington County to help people get rid of house chemicals. Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) is hosting the event at Wild Things Stadium on June 24. It will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. People can bring household chemicals such as cleaners, paint, pesticides, mercury thermometers, or pool chemicals that need to be disposed of. All materials should be brought to the event in car trucks or truck beds. A worker will unload the materials. Anyone who disposes of up to 10 gallons or 50 pounds of aerosol cans will need to pay a $20 fee. Loads exceeding that amount will cost an amount decided on-site. Disposal of a fire extinguisher will cost $12 and mercury will cost $15 per pound. Anyone who would like to drop off their chemical waste is asked to register by calling 412-488-7490 or by visiting www.prc.org/CollectionEvents.

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — (WPXI) – Multiple men are facing charges after they allegedly trespassed inside the Century III Mall. West Mifflin Police say Christopher Cross, 27, Brody Lones, 23, Drake Pierce, 22 went through the abandoned mall and filmed video. The video was shared online and police used it to identify them. Kenlein Ogletree, 21, was also charged. Police say Century III Mall property is private property. They also said the area is extremely dangerous and that the men could have been injured. Private property signs are posted in the area.

(AP) – A search is underway for a missing submersible that carries people to view the wreckage of the Titanic. Canadian officials say the five-person submersible was reported overdue Sunday night about 435 miles (700 kilometers) south of St. John’s, Newfoundland and that the search is being led by the U.S. Coast Guard. The owner of the ship that launched the submersible confirmed that it was operated by OceanGate Expeditions, which has been operating annual voyages since 2021 to the wreckage of the iconic ocean liner. In a statement, the company said it is working to bring the crew back safely.

Detroit (AP) — Americans across the country are observing the relatively new Juneteenth federal holiday with festivals, parades, cookouts and other gatherings. On a long holiday weekend seen by many as a reason for a party, others are urging quiet reflection about the end of slavery and the treatment of Black Americans throughout U.S. history. Although end-of-slavery celebrations are new in many areas, in Memphis, where the slave trade once thrived, the Juneteenth holiday has been celebrated since long before it became a designated federal holiday in 2021. This year, Tennessee lawmakers approved it as a state holiday as well. Schools and federal buildings will be closed Monday to observe the holiday.

BEIJING (AP) — The United States and China have pledged to stabilize their badly deteriorated ties during a critical visit to Beijing by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi pronounced himself satisfied with progress made during talks Monday in Beijing. But Blinken says China refused to resume military-to-military communications, a U.S. priority. It remains to be seen whether the countries can resolve their most important disagreements, many of which have international implications. After meeting with Blinken, Xi said he was pleased with the outcome and said the sides agreed to resume a program of understandings he and President Joe Biden agreed to at a meeting in Bali last year.

CAMRBRIA COUNTY, Pa. — (WPXI) – Two people are dead after a twin-engine plane crashed in Cambria County. According to reports, the plane was a Piper PA-30. It crashed into the woods at around 4 p.m. on Sunday. The Cambria County Coroner’s Office said two people were on the plane when it crashed and both were pronounced dead at the scene. The Federal Aviation Association and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — A bus driver has been arrested on a charge of driving under the influence while transporting the Pittsburgh Pirates from Chicago to Milwaukee for their weekend series with the Brewers. Illinois State Police says the driver was traveling away from officers seeking to escort the bus on its trip to Milwaukee late Thursday. Troopers said they observed more erratic driving and eventually stopped the bus on the right shoulder of Interstate 94 in Chicago. The driver isn’t a Pirates employee but was contracted to drive the team to Milwaukee after the completion of their series with the Cubs.

MIFFLINTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Officials are expressing shock and sadness at the death of one state trooper and the serious wounding of another hours apart in central Pennsylvania over the weekend. Police in Juniata County said a man fired shots into patrol vehicles at a barracks in Juniata County about 11 a.m. Saturday, then wounded 45-year-old Lt. James Wagner at 12:45 p.m. in Mifflintown and later shot and killed 29-year-old Trooper Jacques Rougeau Jr in Walker Township. The gunman, 38-year-old Brandon Stine, was later shot and killed, police said. Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris told reporters Sunday afternoon that “at this point there are no clear motives we can point to.”

(AP) – About 1.5 million people have lost Medicaid coverage in more than two dozen states as a post-pandemic purge of the rolls gets underway. Data analyzed by The Associated Press show some states have dropped coverage for more than half the people whose eligibility cases were decided in April or May. States were prohibited from removing people from Medicaid during the pandemic. But that ban was lifted in April. President Joe Biden’s administration is urging states to slow down because of fears that some eligible people are getting dropped for not filling out paperwork.

(AP) – A spate of mass shootings and violence across the U.S. over the weekend killed at least six people including a Pennsylvania state trooper and left dozens injured. The shootings follow a surge in homicides and other violence over the past several years that experts say accelerated during the coronavirus pandemic. They happened in suburban Chicago, Washington state, central Pennsylvania, St. Louis, Southern California and Baltimore. Experts disagree over causes of the increased violence. It could be due to the prevalence of guns in America, less aggressive police tactics or a decline in prosecutions for misdemeanor weapon offenses.
