North Korea Test-Fires Missiles

June 5, 2022 8:07 am

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea test-fired a barrage of short-range ballistic missiles from multiple locations toward the sea on Sunday, South Korea’s military said, extending a provocative streak in weapons demonstrations this year that U.S. and South Korean officials say may culminate with a nuclear test explosion. Possibly setting a single-day record for North Korean ballistic launches, eight missiles were fired in succession over 35 minutes from at least four different locations, including from western and eastern coastal areas and two inland areas north of and near the capital, Pyongyang, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said. It said the missiles flew 110 to 670 kilometers (68 to 416 miles) at maximum altitudes of 25 to 80 kilometers (15 to 56 miles). Hours later, Japan and the United States conducted a joint ballistic missile exercise aimed at showing their “rapid response capability” and “strong determination” to counter threats, Japan’s Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Russia Shells Kyiv, Sends Warning To West

June 5, 2022 8:06 am

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia took aim at Western military supplies for Ukraine with airstrikes in Kyiv on Sunday that it said destroyed tanks donated from abroad, as President Vladimir Putin warned that any Western deliveries of long-range rocket systems to Ukraine would prompt Moscow to hit “objects that we haven’t yet struck.” The cryptic threat of a military escalation from the Russian leader didn’t specify what the new targets might be, but it comes days after the United States announced plans to deliver $700 million of security assistance for Ukraine that includes four precision-guided, medium-range rocket systems, helicopters, Javelin anti-tank weapon systems, radars, tactical vehicles, spare parts and more. Military analysts say Russia is hoping to overrun the embattled eastern Donbas region, where Russia-backed separatists have fought the Ukrainian government for years, before any weapons that might turn the tide arrive. The Pentagon said earlier this week it will take at least three weeks to get the precision U.S. weapons and trained troops onto the battlefield. Russian forces pounded railway facilities and other infrastructure early Sunday in Kyiv, which had previously seen weeks of eerie calm. Ukraine’s nuclear plant operator, Energoatom, said one cruise missile buzzed the Pivdennoukrainsk nuclear plant, about 350 kilometers (220 miles) to the south, on its way to the capital — citing the dangers of such a near miss.

Tropical Storm Alex Reaches Gulf Of Mexico

June 5, 2022 8:04 am

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Alex, the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, formed Sunday morning in the Gulf of Mexico on a track to come ashore in southern Florida with heavy rains and gusty wind. National Hurricane Center forecasters said in a 5 a.m. advisory that Alex had sustained winds of 50 mph (80 kph) and was located about 270 miles (435 kilometers) northeast of Fort Pierce, Florida. Parts of South Florida were experiencing road flooding from heavy rain and wind Saturday. Officials in Miami warned drivers about road conditions as many cars were stuck on flooded streets. The city was towing stranded vehicles from flooder roadways. Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said the storm tested the system of drainage pumps the city has recently installed as climate change has increasingly made flooding an issue in the low-lying area. Alex is a new version of the storm that was called Hurricane Agatha when it slammed into Mexico’s Pacific Coast earlier this week, killing at least 11 people and leaving 20 missing. It got a new name once the storm crossed Mexico into the Atlantic basin. A tropical storm warning was in effect for Bermuda.

Montour Trail Breaks Ground On Southpointe Connector

June 5, 2022 4:47 am

CECIL TOWNSHIP, Pa. — In less than a year, residents and workers will have a way to reach the Montour Trail through the Southpointe business park. Multiple Washington County officials and groups were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Montour Trail Southpointe Connector Friday morning. The organizations broke ground on Phase 1 of the connector, that will run from the existing trail along Cecil Henderson Road, to Reserve Drive near Klinger Park in Southpointe. The work for this half-mile stretch of new trail is now out for bid, with construction set to begin in late July or early August.  The Gateway Engineers, who created the plans for the project, says the connector should be opened sometime in the fall. Phases two and three of the project will place a trail along Reserve Drive and Klinger Road so that the trail itself runs right into the existing sidewalks along corporate drive in Southpointe.

McCormick Concedes To Mehmet Oz In GOP Primary

June 5, 2022 1:10 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — David McCormick concedes to Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania’s GOP Senate race, says he can’t make up deficit in recount.  McCormick said he had called Oz to concede.  “It’s now clear to me with the recount now largely complete that we have a nominee,” McCormick said at a campaign party at a Pittsburgh hotel.  He added, “Tonight is really about us all coming together.  Before the recount, Oz led McCormick by 972 votes out of 1.34 million votes counted in the May 17 primary. The Associated Press has not declared a winner in the race because an automatic recount is underway and the margin between the two candidates is just 0.07 percentage points.  Friday’s development sets up a general election between Oz, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, and Democrat John Fetterman in what is expected to be one of the nation’s premier Senate contests.  The result could help determine control of the closely divided chamber, and Democrats view it as perhaps their best opportunity to pick up a seat in the race to replace retiring two-term Republican Sen. Pat Toomey.

June 4, 2022 4:56 am

HOUSTON (AP) – Residents of the small Texas town of Centerville remained vigilant for three weeks while authorities searched for a murderer who escaped a prison bus and stabbed and wounded the driver last month near their rural community. The search for 46-year-old Gonzalo Lopez ended late Thursday night when he was killed in a shootout with officers about 220 miles away in Atascosa County, south of San Antonio. But just hours earlier, authorities discovered that Lopez had killed a man and his four grandsons at their ranch near Centerville. Family members and residents of the small community say they are devastated by the killings. Lopez had a long violent history that included killing for Mexican drug cartels.

Alabama Could Have 1st Remote Air Traffic Control

June 4, 2022 4:55 am

SELMA, Ala. (AP) – A newspaper is reporting that a public airport in Alabama could be home to the first remote air traffic control center in the United States. Advanced ATC Inc. is an air traffic control academy based in Valdosta, Georgia. The Selma Times-Journal quotes the company as saying Thursday that it will invest about $4.7 million at Craig Air Field in Dallas County, southeast of Selma. The remote tower uses cameras, real-time video and other features, allowing air traffic controllers to remotely accomplish the duties they previously had to carry out in a traditional control tower. The company’s five-year plan seeks to bring nearly 120 jobs to Selma.

Former Trade Adviser Peter Navarro Indicted

June 4, 2022 4:51 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Justice Department has declined to charge former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and another aide to former President Donald Trump, Dan Scavino, for contempt of Congress for their defiance of subpoenas in the Jan. 6 congressional investigation. That’s according to a person familiar with a letter sent by the Justice Department to a lawyer for the House of Representatives on Friday. The action came the same day the Justice Department said a grand jury had indicted Peter Navarro, a trade adviser in the Trump White House, for his refusal to cooperate with the committee’s investigation. The New York Times first reported the decision not to prosecute Meadows and Scavino.
