NRA In Turmoil But Influence Remains

May 28, 2022 10:23 am

HOUSTON (AP) – Nearly 10 years ago, the slaughter of children at Sandy Hook Elementary School looked like it might break through the United States’ political stalemate on guns. That evaporated a week later when National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre gave a defiant speech. Now, Republicans are making similar points as the nation reels from a massacre that left at least 19 children at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas dead Much has changed since Sandy Hook and the NRA is not the powerhouse it once was, but an expansive view of gun rights is woven so tightly into the fabric of conservatism it might not matter.

(WPXI) – A Pennsylvania State Police trooper in Washington County is facing charges, including DUI, after investigators said he was found intoxicated with an open bottle of rum in his patrol unit.
According to authorities, Trooper Jared Johnson was on duty on May 12th when he was dispatched to reports of a deer in a section of Interstate 70 in Buffalo Township. Johnson marked himself at the scene and is said to have told dispatch that the deer was gone. The dispatcher had trouble understanding Johnson and asked him to repeat his information, with Johnson repeating that the deer was gone. But after continuing to receive calls about the deer – his supervisor went to find Johnson. He says Johnson had slurred speech, glassy eyes, and had trouble standing, and when he went to secure Johnson’s unit, he noticed a bottle of rum on the front passenger seat in a brown paper bag. Johnson was then taken to Washington Hospital where he refused to sign a consent form for a chemical blood test. He was then taken to PSP Washington and released. It was later discovered through his dashcam that he had been involved in an accident on Jefferson and Tyler Avenue while responding to the deer call. Johnson has since been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case.

Senate GOP Blocks Domestic Terrorism Bill, Gun Debate

May 27, 2022 4:14 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – A bipartisan group of senators is trying to find a compromise on gun legislation. That’s after Democrats’ first attempt at responding to the back-to-back mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas, failed Thursday in the Senate. Republicans blocked debate on a domestic terrorism bill that would have opened debate on hate crimes and gun policy. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says he will give negotiations about two weeks while Congress is in recess. The bipartisan group of senators met after the vote and focused on background checks for guns purchased online or at gun shows, red-flag laws designed to keep guns away from those who could harm themselves or others and school security measures.

Some scheduled speakers and performers have backed out, including two Texas lawmakers and “American Pie” singer Don McLean, who said “it would be disrespectful” to go ahead with his act.
