Recount Cranks Up In GOP Primary For U.S. Senate

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Just 910 votes separate the two leading candidates in Pennsylvania’s Republican primary for U.S. Senate. That means counties are preparing to start a recount in the race between celebrity heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz and former hedge fund CEO David McCormick. Oz has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump. At least six counties – Bedford, Clinton, Crawford, Lehigh, Montour, Tioga and Warren – said they’ll begin Friday. Most other counties will begin next week. Some counties were still counting remaining votes from last week’s primary election. The winner will take on Democrat John Fetterman in November.

Train Derails In Harmar Township

HARMAR TOWNSHIP, Pa. — (WPXI) – Officials said 17 tankers were reportedly derailed in Harmar Township on Thursday afternoon. Crews responded to the scene in the 2400 block of Freeport Road.  Freeport Road (Route 1001) remains closed between the Hulton Bridge and Guys Run Road until further notice. Officials also said a train hit a construction truck, which caused the derailment. A waterline for Harmar Township was reportedly broken in the accident. According to Harmar Water Authority, the water flowing from the ruptured pipe was turned off. Resident’s water service was not impacted. The driver of the construction truck that the train hit and two train operators were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Norfolk Southern confirmed that the derailed train was one of their trains. They issued the following statement: “Late this afternoon, one of our eastbound trains struck a dump truck carrying stone, which caused a derailment. Thank you to the first responders who assisted our crew members. At this time, our personnel are on-site and working with local authorities to determine next steps.”

Drummer For “Yes” Dies at 72

SEATTLE (AP) – Alan White, the longtime drummer for progressive rock pioneers Yes who also played on projects with John Lennon and George Harrison, has died. He was 72. White’s death was announced on his Facebook page by his family. The post said he died at his Seattle-area home on Thursday after a brief illness. Just days earlier Yes had announced that due to health issues White would not take part in the band’s upcoming tour of the United Kingdom. White joined Yes in 1972, replacing original drummer Bill Bruford. In a band noted for frequent lineup changes, White was a constant and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes in 2017.  (Photo:  Facebook)

Smith Township Man Charged With Killing Neighbor

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. — (WPXI)- A man is in jail after police say he shot and killed his neighbor after getting into an argument with him in Smith Township Tuesday afternoon. Bryce Tacy, 52, is accused of killing 44-year-old Jerry Anderson. Emergency crews responded to 18 Loffert Road in Smith Township around 2:30 p.m. The SWAT team was called in after Tacy allegedly refused to come out peacefully. Anderson’s says his nephew and Tacy had a history of disputes. Jason Walsh, the Washington District Attorney, said an argument is what fueled the shooting. Walsh alleges Tacy shot Anderson while he was on his lawnmower. “I believe there have been some disputes in the past,” said Walsh said. “The suspect fired two shots into the victim’s back and in the back of the head.” According to state police, the gun used was legally owned by Tacy. Anderson’s uncle tells Channel 11 he leaves behind a wife and two twin boys.  Tacy is being held in the Washington County Jail without bond.  His preliminary hearing is set for June 1st.

Actor Ray Liotta Dead At 67

(AP) – Ray Liotta, the actor best known for playing mobster Henry Hill in “Goodfellas” and baseball player Shoeless Joe Jackson in “Field of Dreams,” has died. He was 67. A source at the Dominican Republic’s National Forensic Science Institute who was not authorized to speak to the media confirmed the death of Ray Liotta and said his body was taken to the Cristo Redentor morgue. Representatives for Liotta told The Hollywood Reporter and NBC News that he died in his sleep Wednesday night in the Dominican Republic, where he was filming a new movie. Liotta’s most iconic role, as real life mobster Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas” came in 1990.  (Photo:  ABC News)

Four People Shot Going To Prom Party In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Four people were shot Wednesday night as they walked to a prom party in the Mantua neighborhood, according to Philadelphia police. WPVI-TV reports that just after 7 p.m., on the 3500 block of Fairmount Avenue, surveillance video captured a gunman who was reportedly on a bike when he fired the gunshots. The suspect is described as wearing all black clothing and a white mask over his face. Police say the victims include a 19-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman, her 34-year-old mother and a 60-year-old man. The 19-year-old man remains in critical condition. The other three victims are expected to survive their injuries. The suspect has not been arrested and police did not give a motive for the shootings.

Goodbye NYC; Estimates Show Big City Losses

Eight of the 10 largest cities in the U.S. lost population during the first year of the pandemic. New estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau show only Phoenix and San Antonio gained new residents from 2020 to 2021. New York led the way, losing more than 305,000 residents, or about 3.5% of its 2020 population. Among the nation’s 10 largest cities, it was followed by Chicago and Los Angeles. Smaller big cities primarily in the Sunbelt gained news residents. Those cities include Austin and Fort Worth in Texas; Jacksonville, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Columbus, Ohio.

Spacey Charged In UK With Sexual Assault Of Three Men

LONDON (AP) – British prosecutors have charged actor Kevin Spacey with four counts of sexual assault against three men. The Crown Prosecution Service said Thursday that Spacey “has also been charged with causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.” Rosemary Ainslie, head of the service’s Special Crime Division, said the charges follow a review of evidence gathered by London’s Metropolitan Police.  Spacey, a 62-year-old double Academy Award winner, was questioned by British police in 2019 about claims by several men that he had assaulted them. Russia Promises To Open Safe Ship Corridor

The Russian Defense Ministry is promising to open a safe corridor to allow foreign ships to leave Black Sea ports. A separate corridor will be open to allow ships to leave Mariupol by sailing from the port on the Sea of Azov port to the Black Sea. Mikhail Mizintsev heads the National Defense Control Center under the General Staff. He says 70 foreign vessels from 16 countries are now in six ports on the Black Sea including Odesa, Kherson and Mykolaiv. Mizintsev says the corridors would be open every day. Earlier Wednesday, the Russia military said Mariupol’s port was functioning again after three months of fighting.

Texas Gunman Was In The School For Over An Hour

UVALDE, Texas (AP) – Texas authorities say the gunman who massacred 21 people at an elementary school was in the building for over an hour before he was killed by law enforcement officers. The amount of time that elapsed has stirred anger and questions among family members, who demanded to know why authorities did not storm the place and put a stop to the rampage more quickly. Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Travis Considine said 18-year-old Salvador Ramos entered Robb Elementary School and began his rampage at 11:40 a.m. Tuesday. A Border Patrol tactical unit began trying to get inside the building an hour later, and at 12:58 p.m., radio chatter noted he was dead.
