Show Of Support For Abortion Rights Expected At US Rallies

May 14, 2022 10:31 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – Demonstrators are rallying from coast to coast in the face of an anticipated Supreme Court decision that could overturn women’s right to an abortion. More than 380 events are planned Saturday, with the largest gatherings in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and other big cities. In the nation’s capital, activists planned to gather at the Washington Monument before marching to the Supreme Court. Tens of thousands were expected at the events coast to coast after a leaked draft Supreme Court ruling suggested Roe v. Wade will be overturned. Polls show most Americans want to preserve access to abortion but the Supreme Court appears poised to let the states have the final say.

Putin Warns Finland NATO Membership Would Harm Relations

May 14, 2022 10:30 am

HELSINKI (AP) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned his Finnish counterpart that relations between the two neighbors could be “negatively affected” if Finland follows through with plans to apply for NATO membership. The Kremlin’s press service said in a statement Saturday Putin told Sauli Niinisto that Finland’s abandonment “of its traditional policy of military neutrality would be an error since there are no threats to Finland’s security.” The response came after Niinisto told Putin in a phone conversation that the militarily non-aligned Nordic country that has a complex history with its huge eastern neighbor “will decide to apply for NATO membership in the coming days”. Niinisto told Putin that Finland’s security environment had starkly changed after Moscow’s Feb. 24 invasion on Ukraine.

Governor Wolf Calls For $2000 Payments

May 14, 2022 3:58 am

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf is calling for action on his proposal to send Pennsylvania residents checks for up to $2000. He did this from the steps of the Wesley Union A.M.E. Zion Church in Harrisburg accompanied by Representative Patty Kim. He is asking the Republican led legislature to act on his $500 million PA Opportunity Program that will be funded from the federal American Rescue Plan Act. Under Wolf’s plan households earning $80,000 or less would qualify for checks of up to $2000 to use for whatever purpose they need. This proposal is part of a $1.7 billion dollar plan that Wolf laid out in February that would guide the usage of the $2 billion dollars Pennsylvania received from the American Rescue Plan Act. Both the state house and senate have been slow to act on Wolf’s plan. If the funds are not used, they will be sent back to the federal government by December 31, 2024.

The issue of fake accounts on Twitter is not secret. In its quarterly filing with the SEC, even Twitter doubted that its count of bot accounts was correct, conceding that the estimate may be low.  (Photo:  AP)

The Jan. 6 panel’s subpoenas for McCarthy of California and Republican Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Andy Biggs of Arizona and Mo Brooks of Alabama come as the investigation is winding down and as the panel prepares for a series of public hearings this summer.

Rand Paul Stalls Senate OK Of Ukraine Aid Package

May 13, 2022 4:12 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul is defying leaders of both parties and has single-handedly delayed until next week Senate approval of an additional $40 billion to help Ukraine and its allies withstand Russia’s three-month old invasion. The Senate was poised to debate and vote on a package of military and economic aid that underscores U.S. determination to reinforce its support for Ukraine’s outnumbered forces. Paul denied leaders the unanimous agreement they needed to proceed. He said he wanted language included that would have an inspector general scrutinize the new spending. Approval still seems certain.
