Israeli Forces Battle Hamas Around Gaza City

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli ground forces are attacking Hamas militants and infrastructure in northern Gaza. The military said Tuesday that some 800,000 people have fled south since the war began more than three weeks ago, even as warplanes continue to strike all across the sealed-off territory. Buoyed by the first successful rescue of a captive held by Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected calls for a cease-fire and again vowed to crush the militant group’s ability to govern Gaza or threaten Israel following its bloody Oct. 7 rampage, which ignited the war. More than half the territory’s 2.3 million Palestinians have fled their homes, as supplies of food, medicine, water and fuel run low.

Georgia Man Kicked Out Of Steelers Game

PITTSBURGH — (WPXI) – A Georgia man was kicked out of Sunday’s Steelers game after hitting fans with a towel, according to police. Richard Bryant, 33, of Fairburn, Georgia, is charged with defiant trespassing, according to court documents. Police said at 1:40 p.m. Sunday, security services informed them of a disorderly person who needed to be ejected, later identified as Bryant, sitting in section 133. Bryant was reportedly swinging a towel and hitting people seated around him with the towel. Police escorted Bryant from the stadium, and he was given an official notice of ejection and told not to return. At 3:21 p.m., police were called back to the section after Bryant allegedly reentered the stadium. Bryant was removed again and taken to the Allegheny County Jail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 9.

Spending Tops $17M In Pa. High Court Campaign

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Millions more dollars are flowing into Pennsylvania’s race for a state Supreme Court seat, as labor unions, trial lawyers and billionaires spend heavily. The latest reports due Friday show that spending zipped past $17 million, as Democrat Dan McCaffery, Republican Carolyn Carluccio (pictured) and their allies claw for an advantage. The election is Nov. 7. More than half, at least $12 million, came after Sept. 18, while more than $5 million is from groups that are conduits for cash from two billionaires who are major GOP donors. Labor unions and trial lawyers support McCaffery. The court currently has a 4-2 Democratic majority and one open seat.

Spending Highlighted At Washington City Council

Washington City Council held their agenda setting meeting Monday for the month of November. In the meeting several measures were previewed that would affect resident’s wallets. Council announced the proposed solid waste and recycling collection fee. The 2024 fee will be set at $300 per dwelling. A late fee of $30 dollars will be attached if not paid by the due date. The due date is tentatively planned to be April 1. The preliminary budget for 2024 was also announced. The spending plan is a balanced budget just over $15 million. The plan calls for no tax increase in 2024. Council will formally adopt these measures at their voting meeting on November 2.

Washington Man Faces Several Years In State Prison

A Washington man pleaded guilty on Monday regarding a May 2022 shooting in Lincoln Terrace. Martez Thomas, 22 will spend the next 3-8 years in state prison. He pleaded guilty to two felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He received two 3-8 year sentences that will be served concurrently. Thomas was accused of shooting out of his car at Jatorrian Bey and Javarr Thomas on Forrest Avenue on May 3 of 2022. The incident occurred near a playground near the LeMoyne Community Center. Thomas will also pay $500 restitution for damages to the victim’s vehicle.

Hours-Long SWAT Situation Ends Peacefully In Oakland

(WPXI) – An hours-long SWAT situation in South Oakland has concluded after a barricaded man surrendered peacefully. Since around noon, police had been asking the public to avoid Childs Street in South Oakland because of a police response. Pittsburgh Public Safety confirmed in a tweet SWAT was on scene in the 3700 block of Childs Street. They say the response was for a “barricaded male in crisis” who possibly had a firearm. Around 3 p.m., Pittsburgh Public Safety said the man surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody. The police presence closed down Swineburne St. from Dawson to Swineburne Bridge and Parkview Ave. from Blvd. of the Allies for hours.

FDA Warns Against Using Certain Eye Drops

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. health regulators are warning consumers not to use more than two dozen varieties of over-the-counter eyedrops due to the risk of infections that could lead to blindness. The advisory from the Food and Drug Administration applies to lubricating drops sold by six companies, including CVS Health, Rite Aid and Target. The agency says consumers should stop using the products immediately and avoid purchasing any found in pharmacies and other stores. The agency recommended recalling the products last week after FDA inspectors found unsanitary conditions at the factory that produced the drops.  (Photo:  AP)

General Motors Reaches Tentative Deal With UAW

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors and the United Auto Workers union have reached a tentative contract agreement that could end a six-week-old strike against Detroit automakers. The deal follows the pattern set with Ford last week and Jeep maker Stellantis over the weekend. The deals will last four years and eight months and include 25% general pay raises and cost of living adjustments. Combined they bring the wage increase to over 30% over the life of the contract. The person briefed on the matter, who didn’t want to be identified because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the deal, was to be announced early Monday.

No Injuries After Robbery, Shot Fired On IUP Campus

INDIANA, Pa. — (WPXI) – One person is in custody after a robbery on IUP’s campus. The robbery happened at 9:40 p.m. Sunday near Miller Stadium. A representative from the university said a campus police officer fired a shot while responding to the incident. In an alert sent to students, the university said the suspect was immediately taken into custody after the robbery. No one was injured. Police say there is no threat to the campus.

‘Friends’ Creators, Actors, Family Mourn Matthew Perry

(AP) – Matthew Perry was mourned on social media by “Friends” creators, co-stars and some very famous fans. They include Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his mom on the hit sit-com “Friends,” as well as Adele. Perry played Chandler Bing on NBC’s “Friends” for 10 seasons. He was found dead at his Los Angeles home on Saturday. Trudeau, who attended elementary school with Perry while their parents worked together, thanked Perry for the laughs. Adele, who didn’t know the “Friends” star personally, took time at her Las Vegas show to address the loss. Others who posted online included Morgan Fairchild, Selma Blair and Wendell Pierce.
