WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is holding off on his tariff threats against Mexico and Canada for 30 days after the two U.S. neighbors agreed to boost border security efforts. Trump on Saturday had directed that 25% tariffs on most imports from the two American partners — and 10% on Canadian energy products — go into effect at midnight Tuesday. The two nations threatened retaliation of their own, raising the prospects of a broader regional trade war. In a statement on X, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that on a call with Trump he pledged additional cooperation on border security. It follows similar moves by Mexico earlier Monday. “Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together,” Trudeau said.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — China has reiterated it could take “necessary countermeasures” after U.S. President Donald Trump decided to impose a 10% tariff on China for allegedly doing too little to stem the production of precursor chemicals for the drug fentanyl. The Foreign Ministry statement issued Sunday did not mention any specific retaliatory measures, but said “China calls on the United States to correct its wrongdoings, maintain the hard-won positive dynamics in the counternarcotics cooperation, and promote a steady, sound and sustainable development of China-U.S. relationship.” China says the U.S. action violates World Trade Organization rules and has vowed to bring a case before the body that governs global commerce.

Worries about President Donald Trump’s tariffs are hurting U.S. stocks. The S&P 500 sank 1.7% in early Monday trading following similar losses for markets across Asia and Europe. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 557 points, and the Nasdaq composite dropped 2.1%. Everything from bitcoin to the Mexican peso fell, not just stocks of the U.S. companies expected to be the first to feel pain from tariffs on goods imported from Canada, Mexico and China. Some of the sharpest losses hit Big Tech and stocks that would be hurt most by higher interest rates and the worse inflation that could result from tariffs.

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump says Americans could feel “some pain” from the emerging trade war triggered by his tariffs against Canada, Mexico and China. He’s also claiming that Canada would “cease to exist” without its trade surplus with the United States. The trade penalties that Trump signed Saturday at his Florida resort are causing a mix of panic, anger and uncertainty. And they’re threatening to rupture a decades-old partnership on trade in North America while further straining relations with China. But by following through on a campaign pledge, Trump may have simultaneously broken his promise to voters in last year’s election that his administration could quickly reduce inflation. The tariffs are set to launch on Tuesday.

TORONTO (AP) – Fans at a Toronto Raptors game have continued an emerging trend of booing the American national anthem at pro sporting events in Canada. Fans of the NBA’s lone Canadian franchise booed the anthem Sunday after similar reactions broke out Saturday night at NHL games in Ottawa, Ontario, and Calgary, Alberta. Those instances happened hours after U.S. President Donald Trump made his threat of import tariffs on America’s northern neighbor a reality. Trump declared an economic emergency in order to place taxes of 25% on imports from Canada. U.S. national anthem boos in Canada are rare, but not unheard of especially when tied to world events.
