WASHINGTON (AP) — A jury will soon decide whether the onetime leader of the Proud Boys extremist group is guilty in one of the most serious cases brought in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Closing arguments could be as early as this week before jurors in Washington, D.C., decide whether to convict Proud Boys national chairman Enrique Tarrio and four lieutenants of seditious conspiracy. Defense attorneys have argued that there is no evidence of a plan for the Proud Boys to attack the Capitol on Jan. 6. The case is expected to go to the jury after almost three months of testimony, dozens of witnesses and countless legal fights.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says online leaks of scores of highly classified documents about the Ukraine war present a “very serious” risk to national security and senior leaders are quickly taking steps to mitigate the damage. In the days since Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin became aware of the leaks, he’s reached out to top allies, convened daily meetings to assess the damage and set up a group not only to assess the scope of the information lost but review who has access to those briefings. And as the public airing of the data sends shockwaves across the U.S. government, the White House says there are concerns there could be additional leaks.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — A grand jury in Virginia has indicted the mother of a 6-year-old boy who shot his teacher. Prosecutor Howard Gwynn said in a news release that a grand jury sitting in Newport News on Monday charged the boy’s 25-year-old mother with felony child neglect and a misdemeanor charge of endangering a child by reckless storage of a firearm. The Associated Press isn’t naming the mother to shield the identity of her son. The boy shot his first-grade teacher, Abby Zwerner, on Jan. 6 inside her classroom at Richneck Elementary School. Police say the boy’s mother legally purchased the gun. Her attorney has said the gun was secured on a top shelf in her closet and had a trigger lock.

Competing rulings by two federal judges over the availability of the abortion pill mifepristone are sowing alarm and confusion — and opening a new front in the battle over abortion in the United States. One federal judge in Amarillo, Texas on Friday put on hold federal approval of mifepristone, one of the most commonly used medications to end pregnancies. Another federal judge in Spokane, Washington ruled differently in a separate case and ordered the federal government not to restrict the drug’s availability. Some abortion rights advocates have little confidence the U.S. Supreme Court will side with abortion advocates on the abortion pill issue after the court last June struck down Roe v. Wade.
