BELLE VERNON, Pa. — (WPXI) – Students and employees of Rostraver Elementary School had a twist in their day when a student found a small starter gun buried behind the building. According to a press release from the Belle Vernon Area School District, a student found what appeared to be a small handgun buried in the mud while on a class break. The student notified a teacher, and the gun was taken into possession by Rostraver Township Police. The weapon was incapable of functioning, and fell apart as it was cleaned. The school’s principal and a member of the Rostraver Township Police Department visited classrooms throughout the day to explain the situation to students. Parents were also notified of the incident.

April 26, 2022 12:28 pm

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A 3-month-old baby who was kidnapped from his San Francisco Bay Area home was found Tuesday and three suspects were detained, police said.  The baby, Brandon Cuellar, was unharmed but was taken to a hospital as a precaution, San Jose Police Department officials said during a news conference.  “This incident is a parents’ worst nightmare. We are fortunate it resulted in a positive outcome,” San Jose Police Chief Anthony Mata said, declining to release details on where the baby was found or the identities of the three people who were detained.  The child was taken Monday from his apartment in San Jose by a man who was seen on video walking away with the baby in a carrier.  Police believe they have apprehended the man in the video, who was one of the three taken into custody, said San Jose Assistant Police Chief Paul Joseph.  Also detained was a woman who was with the child’s grandmother before the abduction, San Jose Police spokesman Sgt. Wildfires Tear Across Several States

April 26, 2022 4:10 am

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Firefighters across the country are battling multiple wildfires as tinder-dry conditions and high winds whip up flames from Arizona to Florida. That includes a prairie fire in rural southwestern Nebraska that officials say has killed one person, injured at least 15 firefighters and destroyed at least six homes. A break in the Midwestern weather allowed crews to make significant progress on that blaze Monday along the Nebraska-Kansas line. But hotter, windier weather is forecast Tuesday. More than 1,350 square miles have burned in wildfires across the country so far this year. Officials say that’s outpacing the 10-year average by about 30%.

Russian Diplomat Warns Against Provoking WWIII

April 26, 2022 4:08 am

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – The British Defense Ministry says Russian forces have taken the Ukrainian city of Kreminna after days of street-to-street fighting. Moscow also unleashed attacks against rail and fuel installations far from the front lines. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned Ukraine against provoking World War III, saying on Russian TV that the threat of a nuclear conflict “should not be underestimated.” The British military did not say how it knew Kreminna in the Lukansk region had fallen. It also described heavy fighting as Russian forces tried to advance toward other cities in Moscow’s new eastern offensive. Lavrov’s comments came after U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the U.S. wants to see Russia weakened “to the point where it can’t do things like invade Ukraine.”

Justices Hear Fight Over Asylum-Seekers Waiting In Mexico

April 26, 2022 4:06 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Biden administration is seeking the Supreme Court’s go-ahead to end a controversial Trump-era immigration program that forces some people seeking asylum in the U.S. to wait in Mexico for their hearings. The justices are hearing arguments Tuesday in the administration’s appeal of lower-court rulings that require immigration officials to reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy. Republican-led states that sued to keep the program in place say it has helped reduce the flow of people into the U.S. President Donald Trump launched Migrant Protection Protocols, as it is formally known, in 2019. President Joe Biden suspended it on his first day in office.

April 26, 2022 3:59 am

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Coal-related interests are suing to block the centerpiece of Gov. Tom Wolf’s plan to fight climate change, a carbon-pricing policy that will impose a cost for emitting planet-warming carbon dioxide from fossil fuel-fired power plants. The lawsuit filed Monday in Commonwealth Court by owners of coal-fired power plants, owners of coal mines and labor unions say the regulation written by Wolf’s administration is unconstitutional. The regulation took effect Saturday. It made Pennsylvania the first major fossil-fuel state to adopt a carbon-pricing policy. Wolf, a Democrat, is already fighting one lawsuit intended to block the regulation and maintains the state can regulate carbon dioxide under existing air pollution laws.

TEXAS – (WPXI) – Professional bodybuilder Shane Post is recovering after being shot by a neighbor over a parking space dispute. Post was born and raised in Claysville, but moved to Texas with his wife several years ago. Ring doorbell video caught the altercation outside the Posts’ townhouse last Tuesday. Shane’s coworker parked in the neighbor’s spot moments before the altercation. Shane’s wife can be seen walking outside to greet them with her 3-month-old baby in her arms. She tells Channel 11 she wanted to introduce the coworker to the infant, but instead witnessed her husband being shot. Police arrested neighbor Nicky Brown. Brown approached the men wearing a bathrobe, pulled out the gun and shot Post at close range. “Shane fell on the ground he as holding his hand on his stomach. He was telling him to stop, asking him to stop. He literally shot him just because of the parking spot,” Irina Post told Channel 11. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with medical expenses and help the family move. Irina says she hopes to pack up their family before her husband is released from the hospital. She says the neighbor who shot him is already out on bail and back living next door.
