Hospitals Land Millions In American Rescue Plan Funds

March 18, 2022 4:09 am

The Covid-19 pandemic is still causing pain with local hospitals as far as losses that they incurred for treating patients that used their services if they were hospitalized for Covid-19. Washington County Commissioners approved two measures on Thursday to help both the Washington Health System and Penn Highlands Mon Valley recoup some of those losses. Commissioners approved one measure to allocate more than $4 million to the Washington Health System. They then passed a second measure to allocate nearly $2 million to Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital. Both of those allocations will come from  federal American Rescue Plan Act funds received by the county. Commissioner Diana Irey-Vaughn stated that the commissioners realize “that it is critical to our community to do what we can to ensure that our community hospitals remain standing and providing care.”

Large GOP Primary Field Has Party Leaders Worried

March 18, 2022 2:28 am

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – A big Republican primary field for governor in Pennsylvania is spurring growing discomfort among party leaders that a widely splintered primary vote could produce a winner who cannot beat Democrat Josh Shapiro in November’s general election. Ten Republicans filed paperwork Tuesday to get on the May 17 primary ballot. That is more than party leaders expected and it has propelled them to try to persuade some weaker candidates to drop out. Sam DeMarco, the GOP chairman of Allegheny County, says party leaders don’t want a weak or polarizing candidate for the general election to win the primary election thanks to a splintered primary vote.

13-Year-Old Driving Truck That Caused Fatal Crash

March 17, 2022 4:22 am

HOBBS, N.M. (AP) – A National Transportation Safety Board spokesman says a 13-year-old was driving the pickup truck that struck a van in West Texas in a fiery collision that killed nine people. NTSB Vice Chairman Bruce Landsberg said Thursday the truck’s left front tire, which was a spare tire, also blew out before impact. One must be 14 in Texas to start taking classroom courses for a learner’s license and 15 to receive that provisional license to drive with an instructor or licensed adult in the vehicle. The pickup crossed into the opposite lane on a darkened, two-lane highway before colliding head-on with a van, killing the boy, a man traveling with him, six New Mexico college students and a golf coach.

Diplomats Near Iran Nuclear Agreement

March 17, 2022 4:20 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – As the war in Ukraine rages on, diplomats trying to salvage the languishing 2015 Iran nuclear deal have been forging ahead with negotiations. They now appear to be near the cusp of a deal that would bring the U.S. back into the accord and return Iran to compliance with limits on its nuclear program. After 11 months of on-and-off talks in Vienna, U.S. and Iranian officials say only a very small number of issues remain to be resolved. Meanwhile, Russia appears to have backed down on a threat to crater an agreement over Ukraine-related sanctions that had dampened prospects for a quick deal.

SUV’s & Pickups More Likely To Hit Pedestrians

March 17, 2022 4:18 am

DETROIT (AP) – Drivers of bigger vehicles such as pickup trucks and SUVs are more likely to hit pedestrians while making turns than drivers of cars. That’s according to a new study released Thursday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It points to the increasing popularity of larger vehicles as a possible factor in rising pedestrian deaths on U.S. roads. The authors also questioned whether wider pillars holding up roofs of the larger vehicles make it harder for drivers to spot people. In 2020, the last year for which complete statistics are available, 6,519 pedestrians were killed in the U.S. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that’s up 59% since 2009, and a 4% increase from 2019.

Man Lies His Way Into Elementary; Arrested

March 17, 2022 4:02 am

MONROEVILLE, Pa. — (WPXI) – Police say a man lied his way into Ramsey Elementary School in Monroeville and recorded a child in a bathroom. According to the criminal complaint, Brian Mintmier, 26, approached the school’s main entrance Tuesday afternoon. There he was met by a district employee who is responsible for screening visitors. Mintmier asked the employee to use the restroom, and when he was permitted, he gained access to a hallway restroom unaccompanied. A 10-year-old girl reported she was in a restroom stall when she looked down to see someone holding a cellular phone under the stall and recording her, according to the criminal complaint. School staff members eventually were able to get Mintmier out of the restroom and hold him in the school office until police arrived. A box cutter was also found on Mintmier, police said. According to reports, a letter sent to parents by Gateway School District superintendent William Short, Mintmier was in the bathroom for nearly 40 minutes. In the letter Short said, “This egregious error in judgment is against school district policy and procedures.” The employee who granted access to Mintmier has been placed on leave pending an investigation. Mintmier now faces many charges including invasion of privacy. According to court documents, he was denied bail. (Photo: WPXI)
