Classes Cancelled In McGuffey School District

November 12, 2021 7:04 am

No classes Friday in the McGuffey School District.  Officials initially called for a two-hour delay because of a power outage near the high school in Claysville.  West Penn Power crews were dispatched.  A short time later, the district announced that they would be cancelling classes because repairs and the restoration of power in that area was going to take some time.  A West Penn Power spokesman tells WJPA News that there was extensive damage in an area near the high school.  It was the result of storms and strong winds that rolled through the region overnight.  A  power line was brought down and the cross-arm to at least one utility pole was damaged.  Additional crews were called to the scene to make repairs but it is unclear when power may be restored.

Beloved Dolphin “Winter” Dies

November 12, 2021 4:24 am

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) – A prosthetic-tailed dolphin named Winter that starred in the “Dolphin Tale” movies has died at a Florida aquarium despite life-saving efforts by animal care experts. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium said the 16-year-old female bottlenose dolphin died Thursday evening while being treated for a gastrointestinal abnormality. It says staffers are heartbroken by Winter’s death and the aquarium will be closed Friday to give them time to grieve. Winter was two months old when her tail became entangled in a crab trap near Cape Canaveral, forcing its amputation. “Dolphin Tale” was released in 2011 and chronicled Winter’s recovery and the unprecedented effort to fit her with a prosthetic tail. A sequel followed three years later.

COVID-19 ‘Hot Spots’ Hitting U.S.

November 12, 2021 4:17 am

The contagious delta variant is driving up COVID-19 hospitalizations in the Mountain West and fueling disruptive outbreaks in the North. It’s a worrisome sign of what could be ahead this winter in the U.S. Meanwhile, trends are improving in Florida, Texas and other Southern states that bore the worst of the summer surge. But it’s clear that delta isn’t done with the United States. COVID-19 is moving north and west for the winter as people head indoors, close their windows and breathe stagnant air. A Vermont college recently suspended social gatherings after a spike in cases tied to Halloween parties. Hospitals in New Mexico and Colorado are overwhelmed.

Court Battle Over School Mask Mandate Continues

November 12, 2021 4:11 am

PITTSBURGH — (WPXI) – An application to overturn a pause in the state’s school mask mandate court proceedings was filed late Thursday afternoon. Commonwealth Court Judge Christine Fizzano Cannon ruled that Pennsylvania Acting Secretary of Health Alison Beam did not have the authority to enact such a requirement and that it was “void and unenforceable.” That meant the mask mandate was dead. Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration immediately filed an appeal, which put everything on pause. That meant the mask mandate was still in place. Confirmed by Attorney Thomas King III, Thursday’s application seeks to revert back to Cannon’s filing, which would overturn the mask requirement. “Within mere hours of this Court’s order, the Acting Secretary appealed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court with complete disregard to the ongoing violation of Pennsylvania law,” the filing said. “The Masking Order has been declared to be illegal and void; and, thus, robs Petitioners of the ability to make decisions for themselves.”
