South Greensburg Man Facing Charges After Allegedly Taping Pacifier In Baby’s Mouth

May 27, 2023 4:07 am

SOUTH GREENSBURG, Pa. (WPXI) — A South Greensburg man is facing child endangerment charges after police say he taped a pacifier in his two-month-old baby’s mouth. According to court documents, Jordan Hirst called friends and family in a panic around 8 p.m. on April 25. He didn’t know where his one-and-a-half-year-old son had gone. Those friends called three others to help out. When they got to Hirst’s home, they found his son laying on the floor next to his crib. According to police, there was dried blood in and around his nose. Two people who came to help took the boy to his grandmother’s and returned to the house. During that time, the other three people helping Hirst found his two-month-old baby in her crib with a pacifier taped in her mouth. Police say all five of the people Hirst called that night to help him find his son told police Hirst was drunk when they got to his house. Neighbors in the area did not want to go on camera but say the allegations come as a shock. Just two years ago, the Irwin Council honored Hirst for his work saving a woman’s life when he was an EMT with the Irwin Volunteer Fire Department. Hirst is out on bond. His preliminary hearing is set for June 9.

Death From Spin Scooter In Pittsburgh

May 27, 2023 3:56 am

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WPXI) — A 35-year-old man was killed while riding a Spin Scooter in Pittsburgh. The victim’s sister Katelyn Chertik said that the incident was caused by a pothole her brother hit as he was riding home on one of the scooters. Chertik describes that the impact of the handlebars ruptured his spleen which ultimately was the cause of his death. While Katelyn said her brother loved the scooter pilot program, she feels they need to go. City Council is talking about the scooters as the pilot program comes to an end.  Because the system is self-reporting, the safety facts don’t show the full picture. It’s not clear if the program will continue as the state legislature has to expand it before it ever lands in the city’s lap, but if it does Barb Warwick with City Council District 5 said some changes need to be made. If lawmakers don’t approve the state bill to extend the pilot program, the scooters will be phased out later this summer. The bill is waiting for a Senate vote.

Baseball Player Dies In Dugout Accident

May 26, 2023 12:40 pm

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A coroner in Pennsylvania ruled that a college baseball player died accidentally when a makeshift dugout collapsed and he was struck in the face. Nineteen-year-old Angel Mercado was a middle infielder who had just completed his freshman season at Division II Central Penn College. He had been playing in a summer recreation league that held its games and practices in a park in Harrisburg. Mercado’s coach had built a makeshift dugout there out of wood on Sunday, but city officials told him it wasn’t allowed. The players were dismantling the structure Monday when it unexpectedly collapsed. Mercado died at a hospital the next day.

Mastriano Won’t Run For U.S Senate

May 26, 2023 6:47 am

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A hard-right Pennsylvania state lawmaker says he will not challenge Democratic Sen. Bob Casey. The decision leaves the GOP primary field wide open. State Sen. Doug Mastriano made the announcement Thursday night as top party officials try to recruit a strong candidate in the moderate battleground state in 2024. Former hedge fund CEO David McCormick is the favorite of party leaders and has drawn pledges of financial support from top Republican officials — should he decide to run. Mastriano was endorsed by former President Donald Trump in last year’s race for governor but lost badly. Pennsylvania is a top GOP target in their quest to recapture the Senate majority.

Study; 1-In- 10 Get Long COVID After Omicron

May 26, 2023 4:15 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. study suggests 1 in 10 people are getting long COVID after an omicron infection, a lower estimate than earlier in the pandemic. The National Institutes of Health is studying nearly 10,000 U.S. adults to help better understand why some people suffer debilitating health problems that can last for months or years after even mild COVID-19. In the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers identified a dozen key symptoms that help distinguish long COVID. They say doctors shouldn’t use the list to diagnose patients — it’s only a first step — but it might help future studies.
