Putin Marks Victory Day With Little To Show

May 10, 2022 3:44 am

ZAPORIZHZHIA, Ukraine (AP) – Russian President Vladimir Putin had no major new battlefield successes to tout on his country’s biggest patriotic holiday. Instead, he sought to justify the war again as a necessary response to what he portrayed as a hostile Ukraine. The Victory Day speech gave no sign of where the war is headed or how Russia will marshal more forces for a continuing war. Meanwhile, on the ground, the vital Black Sea port of Odesa came under repeated missile attack, including from hypersonic missiles. Intense fighting is raging in Ukraine’s east, and Russian forces are trying to end the resistance of Ukrainian defenders making their last stand at a steel plant in Mariupol.

Gas Prices Rising In PA

May 10, 2022 3:41 am

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Gas Prices are four cents higher this week in Western Pennsylvania according to AAA’s latest Gas Price Report. The price for a gallon of gas varies across the region, but the average in the area is now at $4.394. In the City of Washington, AAA says gas sits around $4.366. Pittsburgh is currently around 4.390 a gallon. AAA says in the past two weeks, the national average for a gallon of gasoline has risen 20 cents, about $1.36 more expensive than this time last year. The high cost of crude oil, combined with the Russian conflict in Ukraine and COVID lockdowns in China have pushed oil to over $100 a barrel. The “summer blend” of gasoline is another factor in the price per gallon, since it costs producers more to make the type needed this time of year.

Canonsburg Parking A Work In Progress

May 10, 2022 3:20 am

CANONSBURG, Pa. — Canonsburg Council voted unanimously to look at changes in the way parking fees are administered. Council approved a pilot program that will allow free parking on weekends in the borough for 30 days. That program will begin on May 14 and end on June 5. Council also adopted a change in parking fees in the borough. Parking will now be twenty five cents for the first half hour at any space assigned to a parking kiosk. This fee change does not apply to spaces with parking meters. Council also approved its updated fire safety ordinance. It now requires any residential property of three or more units be inspected by public safety on an annual basis. Mayor David Rhome was ecstatic about the unanimous vote pointing to the added safety that the ordinance would provide for residents. Single units and duplexes would only be subjected to the inspection when the property is transferred to another owner. Council also made permanent a one way only segment of North Jefferson Avenue from Pike Street to College Street and made Lou Bell Drive one way from Central to Greenside.

Washington County GOP Chair Worried About Mastriano

May 10, 2022 2:53 am

(AP) – With six days until Pennsylvania’s primary, chairperson of the Washington County Republican Party says he fears a far-right candidate will be the nominee for governor, and that might not be a good thing. Republicans are openly worrying that a leading candidate in the crowded GOP field running for governor is unelectable in the fall general election. Doug Mastriano, a state senator since 2019, has run to the right of the nine-person Republican field and against the party’s establishment in a state still roiled by former President Donald Trump’s baseless election conspiracy theories. Dave Ball, the chairman of the Washington County Republican Party, said Republicans are concerned that Mastriano’s appeal is narrow. But, he says, Republicans will need Mastriano and his voters, and vice versa, to beat Josh Shapiro, the only Democratic gubernatorial candidate, regardless of who wins the primary.

Wildfires Worsen Due To Winds In New Mexico

May 9, 2022 3:24 am

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (AP) – Dangerous, gusty winds are expected to continue across northeast New Mexico into Monday. That’s likely to complicate the fight against wildfires that threaten thousands of homes in mountainous rural communities. Firefighters have been able to stop the fire from spreading eastward toward Las Vegas, New Mexico, the area’s largest city with 13,000 people. But the northern and southern ends of the flames are proving trickier to contain. Wind gusts have topped 50 miles per hour and are keeping some firefighting aircraft on the ground. The fires now cover 275 square miles. That’s more than twice the size of Philadelphia.
