Washington County District Attorney Jason Walsh held a press conference Friday morning to address an officer involved shooting that occurred within the city of Washington on April 2nd. The shooting involved police from Mt. Pleasant and Smith Townships that killed Eduardo Hoover, 38 of Coraopolis. Walsh determined that after an investigation by Pennsylvania State Police, that the shots fired by the officers killing Hoover was an act of justifiable homicide. On that day, County 9-1-1 was alerted that Hoover was driving recklessly almost running over two children. Mt. Pleasant Township and Smith Township police entered into a high speed chase along Rt. 18. As Hoover entered the Washington City limits, traffic slowed him down to allow police to block him in. In an attempt to flee in his vehicle, Hoover tried to run over police and officers fired into his car killing him. According to Walsh an abundance of video evidence confirmed the scenario. Walsh stated that any attempt to propel a 5000 pound vehicle at an officer allows for the use of deadly measures. The officers involved are still on administrative duty. According to their chiefs, they could be returned to regular patrol soon.

A Washington man is in the Washington County Jail for allegedly making threats to kill President Judge John DiSalle. A preliminary hearing for Gerald Gregg, 58 was held Friday. Witness testimony from two individuals stated that on March 30, Gregg was ranting to them about past cases of his and threatening Judge DiSalle. as they encountered him while they were trying to enter the courthouse. Gregg was stopped by city police on a be on the look out call. He was found to have a suspended license but he was released. Gregg was arrested later that day in front of the Sheriff’s office at Courthouse Square. Gregg had felony retaliation against a judge and misdemeanor terroristic threats charges along with a summary driving with a suspended license charge held for court. His formal arraignment date is still undetermined. He will remain in the Washington County Jail without bond.

In the early 19th century, Washington, PA was known as the top exporter of wool in the entire nation. With the first ever “Running of the Wools” it may stake a claim to the best event in the nation. Saturday started with a breakfast crawl around downtown Washington. Then spectators flocked to the main street pavilion where various vendors added to the festive spirit. The highlight of the day is the sheep races throughout the day downtown, the races began at noon to see who’s the fastest sheep in the county. A kitchen clash cooking contest took place as well. Sunday, local churches will wrap up the weekend with blessing services on the theme of the furry creature from 1 to 4 PM. Few of the other exciting events were a sheep shearing contest, “Lambies in Pajamies”, cooking and wool demonstrations were at the Bradford House.

BOSTON (AP) — A former Boston high school dean serving a 26-year sentence in state prison for shooting a student he recruited to deal drugs has been sentenced to an additional 18 years or more on a federal gang-related charge. Prosecutors say Shaun Harrison, 63, lived a double life, portraying himself as a mentor for troubled teens while hiding his own gang ties and luring students into drugs and violence. Harrison pleaded guilty last year to a count of racketeering conspiracy. He’s already serving time after his 2018 conviction for attempting to kill a student who was selling marijuana in the high school at Harrison’s direction.

MOULTRIE, Ga. (AP) — Police in Georgia say a man who killed his workplace manager, mother and grandmother before taking his own life had been involved in a gunfight less than 48 hours earlier. Moultrie Police investigator Nathan Cato says a former co-worker opened fire on 26-year-old Kentavious White on Tuesday. White fired back, police say, but no one was injured. Law enforcement say by predawn Thursday, he was shooting at family homes and a McDonald’s where he had worked. Police have arrested another man on aggravated assault and gun possession charges. The McDonald’s where White was recorded shooting his manager and then himself reopened Friday.

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — Russian state news agency Tass says the car of a prominent pro-Kremlin novelist exploded in Russia on Saturday, injuring him and killing his driver. The agency cited emergency and law enforcement officials. The incident involving the car of Zakhar Prilepin, a well-known nationalist writer and an ardent supporter of what the Kremlin calls “a special military operation” in Ukraine, took place in the region of Nizhny Novgorod, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of Moscow. Prilepin became a supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2014, after Putin illegally annexed the Crimean peninsula. He was involved in the conflict in eastern Ukraine on the side of Russia-backed separatists. Last year, he was sanctioned by the European Union.

LONDON (AP) — King Charles III was crowned at Westminster Abbey, receiving the bejeweled St. Edward’s Crown in a ceremony built on ancient traditions at a time when the monarchy is striving to remain relevant in a fractured modern Britain. Trumpets sounded inside the medieval abbey and the congregation shouted “God save the king!” at a ceremony attended by more than 2,000 guests, including world leaders, aristocrats and celebrities. Outside, thousands of troops, tens of thousands of spectators and a smattering of protesters converged. It was the culmination of a seven-decade journey for Charles from heir to monarch.

The Washington County Chamber of Commerce held a luncheon on Friday to announce their 2023 Athena Leadership Award winner. Dr. Kacey Marra was honored this year. Marra is the Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. She also is an instructor in the Department of Bioengineering. Marra is also the founder and CEO of the medical device company Nerve Repair Technologies. Her company is focused on developing a biodegradable device that will revolutionize nerve regeneration for those with traumatic injuries. Marra has mentored over 300 students in high school, college, graduate and medical students. Kacey lives in Canonsburg with her husband and three children. The Athena Award is presented by Chambers of Commerce, women’s organizations and universities to individuals who demonstrate leadership qualities consistent with the Athena Leadership Model and have attained the highest level of professional excellence.

NEW YORK (AP) — The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is resigning. Dr. Rochelle Walensky says the waning of the COVID-19 pandemic is a good time to make a transition. She sent a resignation letter to President Joe Biden and announced the decision at a CDC staff meeting Friday. Her last day will be June 30. Walensky was previously an infectious-diseases specialist at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. She had no experience running a government health agency when she was sworn in on the first day of the Biden administration. (Photo: AP)

(WPXI) – Gateway High School students were evacuated and then dismissed early – due to two threats received this morning. According to a notice on Gateway’s website, the school received a Safe to Say alert – indicating a social media threat was circulating across western Pennsylvania that didn’t specify a district or school. That threat was determined to be a swatting incident. Then, the high school principal received a follow-up Safe to Say alert indicating a bomb was placed inside the high school. The building was then evacuated around eleven o’clock and Monroeville police were called in to search the building.
