No Result In Canadian Railroad/Union Hearing

August 24, 2024 10:18 am

TORONTO (AP) — A workers union and Canada’s two major freight railroads wrapped up a nine-hour arbitration hearing with the Canada Industrial Relations Board. But there was no decision Friday on whether the board would order one of the railroads back to work following a potentially devastating stoppage. The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference filed a 72-hour strike notice Friday morning against Canadian National, while the trains continue to run. Workers at Canadian Pacific Kansas City went on strike on Thursday. The government forced the companies and the union into arbitration. The union plans to challenge the arbitration order and questions whether the industrial relations board has the authority to order them back to work. But the Teamsters said they would follow the board’s order.

August 24, 2024 10:12 am

SOLINGEN, Germany (AP) — Authorities say an attacker with a knife killed three people and seriously wounded at least five late Friday at a festival in the western German city of Solingen. Witnesses alerted police shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday to an unknown perpetrator having wounded several people with a knife on a central square, the Fronhof. Police say the attacker is on the run, and they so far had only very thin information on the assailant. The “Festival of Diversity” began Friday and was supposed to run through Sunday. It was meant to mark the city’s 650th anniversary with several stages in central streets offering attractions such as live music, cabaret and acrobatics.

Fire Breaks Out On Greek Oil Tanker

August 24, 2024 10:09 am

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Fires have broken on a Greek-flagged oil tanker previously attacked by Yemen’s Houthi rebels this week. The vessel now appears to be adrift in the Red Sea. It wasn’t immediately clear what had happened to the Sounion. The oil tanker had been abandoned by its crew on Thursday and reportedly anchored in place. The rebels are suspected to have gone back and attacked at least one other vessel that later sank as part of their monthslong campaign against shipping in the Red Sea. But the Houthis made no immediate comment. The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center reported the fires in a note to mariners on Friday night.

August 24, 2024 5:35 am

WEST BROWNSVILLE, Pa. — Neighbors in West Brownsville tell Channel 11 police and sheriff’s deputies had a large area of Main Street, as well as Middle Street, shut down Friday afternoon for multiple hours. According to West Brownsville Police, their office, State Police, and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office were serving multiple arrest warrants at a house on Main Street. One neighbor said he returned home in the middle of the apparent standoff and was told by state troopers to leave the area for his safety. According to that neighbor, he saw investigators at the same house on Wednesday. Police say they attempted to serve the warrants Wednesday but were unsuccessful. Friday, they were able to arrest the man they were looking for. Investigators say one of the warrants was for a probation violation.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Suspending Presidential Bid

August 23, 2024 5:07 am

PHOENIX (AP) — Robert F. Kennedy says he is suspending his independent presidential bid and is backing Donald Trump. Kennedy said Friday in Arizona that his internal polls had showed that his presence in the race would hurt Trump and help Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. He cited free speech, the war in Ukraine and “a war on our children” as among the reasons to try to remove his name from the ballot in battleground states. He made clear that he wasn’t formally ending his bid and said his supporters could continue to back him in the majority of states where they are unlikely to sway the outcome. Kennedy said the move followed conversations with Trump over the past few weeks.  (Photo:  AP)

Eight Students & Bus Driver Injured In Crash

August 23, 2024 4:53 am

MOUNT PLEASANT TOWNSHIP, Pa. — (WPXI) – Eight students and the bus driver were injured in a school bus crash in Washington County on Thursday. According to witnesses, the bus was full of high school-aged Western Area Career and Technology Center students from the Fort Cherry School District when it ran off Westland Road near Second Street in the Westland area of Mt. Pleasant Township around 2:30 Thursday afternoon. Two students were flown by helicopter in serious condition—one to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh and the other to UPMC Presbyterian. Six other students were hospitalized with minor injuries, along with the driver of the Fort Cherry school bus. According to witnesses, the bus hit a fence before splitting the gap between a pair of trees and careening into a field. “She [the driver] had, for whatever reason, lost control and came off the road where that squad is at, came into the field, into the hill, the bus violently bounced up and down several times creating injuries to the students that they sustained,” said Chief Tom Bruce, with Fort Cherry Ambulance. It’s still unclear what caused the driver to lose control. The Pennsylvania State Police crash unit is investigating. In a statement, Fort Cherry’s superintendent, Thomas Samosky, said, in part, “We can report that all students and the driver have been assessed, and at this time, we are monitoring their condition closely. We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the first responders who arrived quickly at the scene and provided immediate care and assistance.”
