Alito Says Court Rushed To Block Trump

April 26, 2025 4:51 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — Justice Samuel Alito has written a sharp dissent that castigates the seven-member majority for blocking the Trump administration from deporting any Venezuelans held in northern Texas under an 18th-century wartime law. The dissent was released Saturday night, hours after the court’s intervention against the Republican administration. Alito says the Supreme Court acted “literally in the middle of the night” and without sufficient explanation. Alito says there was “dubious factual support” for granting the request in an emergency appeal from the American Civil Liberties Union. That group contends that immigration authorities appeared to be moving to restart such removals under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — Disgraced former U.S. Rep. George Santos has been sentenced to over seven years in prison. Santos sobbed on Friday as he heard his 87-month sentence. The New York Republican pleaded guilty last summer to federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Santos admitted he deceived donors and stole the identities of nearly a dozen people to fund his congressional campaign. He served less than a year in Congress before being expelled in 2023 after his lies and fraud were uncovered. Prosecutors sought a seven-year prison sentence for Santos. His lawyers had called for two years behind bars.  (Photo:  AP)

April 26, 2025 4:47 am

World dignitaries and Catholic faithful have attended Pope Francis’ funeral in St. Peter’s Square. Despite the presence of presidents and princes, prisoners and migrants ushered him into the basilica where he will be buried, reflecting his priorities as pope. The Vatican said Saturday about 200,000 people have flocked to the pope’s funeral mass. U.S. President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, the U.N. chief and European Union leaders, as well as Prince William and the Spanish royal family, were in attendance. Francis is breaking with recent tradition and will be buried in the St. Mary Major Basilica, where a simple underground tomb awaits him with just his name: Franciscus.

Saturday Is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

April 26, 2025 3:55 am

Today, Saturday, April 26th is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day from 10 am-2 pm at locations across the country.  This event, which happens twice a year, is a safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs at locations in communities throughout the country. Find a location near you.  The October 2024 Take Back Day brought in 629,953 lbs. (314 tons) of medication.  This brings the total amount of prescription drugs collected by DEA since the fall of 2010 to more than 19.2 million pounds (9,600 tons) of medication.  Most people who misuse prescription drugs get them from family, friends, and acquaintances.  You can make a difference by keeping track of the medicine you have, by rethinking where and how you keep your medications in your home, and by safely disposing of any unused medications.

PA Department Of Aging Showcases Services

April 26, 2025 3:54 am

This week, the Pennsylvania Department of Aging (PDA) showcased the services and resources it makes available to older Pennsylvanians during a two-day Aging Network Volunteer Conference in Pittsburgh. Some 52 agencies from throughout the Commonwealth were welcomed. “This conference is a unique forum for our volunteers to meet with their fellow volunteers from across the Commonwealth in the same program areas while engaging, recognizing and strengthening their skill sets. Our aging network couldn’t deliver the services that it does without the support of nearly 26,000 volunteers. This year’s conference theme is ‘Volunteers are Everyday Heroes,’ and the caring individuals who volunteer are heroically making a difference in older Pennsylvanians’ lives. They help older adults stay informed, healthy, independent and in their communities” said Secretary of Aging Jason Kavulich. “I commend all the Pennsylvanians who devote countless hours to volunteering. I also invite anyone who may be thinking about volunteering to join our robust group of aging network volunteers. It’s an opportunity to make a difference not only in the lives of older adults, but also in their own lives.” The Shapiro Administration and PDA are working to improve the infrastructure of the aging services. In May, the Department will launch a comprehensive Caregiver Toolkit to support the needs of PA’s 1.5 million unpaid caregivers. The nearly 26,000 aging network volunteers across the Commonwealth donate an estimated 1.6 million hours of service a year with an estimated value of more than $53.4 million.

Hundreds of disappointed people were turned away when authorities closed St. Peter’s Square hours before the viewing period ended. Francis will be buried after a funeral Mass on Saturday.

Judge Halts Parts Of Trump’s Elections Overhaul

April 25, 2025 5:07 am

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge has agreed with voting rights groups and Democrats that the Constitution gives the power to regulate federal elections to states and Congress — not the president. U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington blocked the Trump administration from immediately enacting certain changes to how federal elections are run, including adding a proof-of-citizenship requirement to the federal voter registration form. Trump had called for this and other changes in a March executive order. The decision is a setback for the president, who has argued a proof-of-citizenship requirement is needed to restore public confidence in elections. Still, the judge allowed other parts of Trump’s order to go forward for now, including a directive to tighten mail ballot deadlines.

China Denies Any Talks With US Over Tariffs

April 25, 2025 5:05 am

BANGKOK (AP) — China has denied any suggestion it’s in active negotiations with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump over tariffs, saying any notion of progress in the matter is as groundless as “trying to catch the wind.” China’s comments come after Trump said Tuesday things are going fine with China and the final tariff rate on China’s exports would come down “substantially” from the current 145%. China’s Ministry of Commerce spokesman He Yadong said Thursday any form of negotiations must be conducted on the basis of mutual respect. Trump says it would be “physically impossible” to go through negotiations with dozens of countries.

Most Americans Expect Higher Prices As A Result Of Tariffs

April 25, 2025 5:04 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll suggests Americans’ trust in President Donald Trump to bolster the U.S. economy appears to be faltering. The survey finds many people fear the country is being steered into a recession and Trump’s broad and haphazardly enforced tariffs will cause prices to rise. Roughly half of U.S. adults say the Republican president’s trade policies will increase prices “a lot” and another 3 in 10 think prices could rise “somewhat.” About half of Americans are “extremely” or “very” concerned about the possibility of the U.S. economy going into a recession in the next few months.
