CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Four space station astronauts are back on Earth after a quick SpaceX flight home. Their capsule splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida coast late Saturday. The crew from the U.S., Russia and Japan spent five months at the International Space Station. Among those returning was NASA’s Nicole Mann, the first Native American woman to fly in space. She says she couldn’t wait to feel the wind on her face, smell fresh grass and enjoy some delicious Earth food. Their replacements arrived at the space station more than a week ago.

Israeli Forces Kill 3 Palestinian Militants

March 12, 2023 8:11 am

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli forces fatally shot three Palestinian militants who opened fire on troops in the occupied West Bank. It was the latest bloodshed in a year-long wave of violence in the region. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, an armed group, claimed the men as members. The Israeli military says one gunman turned himself in. Sunday’s deaths bring to 80 the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli fire since the start of the year, as Israel has stepped up arrest raids in the West Bank. A spasm of Palestinian attacks against Israelis has killed 14 people in 2023. The current round of violence is one of the worst between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank in years.

Oil Giant Makes Record Profit In 2022

March 12, 2023 8:11 am

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Oil giant Saudi Aramco says it earned $161 billion last year, claiming the highest-ever recorded annual profit by a publicly listed company and drawing immediate criticism from activists. The monster profit by the firm, known formally as the Saudi Arabian Oil Co., came off the back of energy prices rising after Russia launched its war on Ukraine in February 2022. Sanctions have limited the sale of Moscow’s oil and natural gas in Western markets. That profit, however, comes amid growing international concerns over the burning of fossil fuels accelerating climate change. Amnesty International criticized Aramco’s profit due to that.

Many Worries A Month After Train Derailment

March 12, 2023 8:09 am

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (AP) — Headaches, congestion, itchy skin rashes — and fear. That’s what many residents are experiencing a month after a train loaded with hazardous chemicals derailed in East Palestine, Ohio. Worry and mistrust grip a community whipsawed by assurances that the water and air is safe, warnings of coverups and danger, and social media misinformation. Heather Bable says she doesn’t feel safe in the town where her family has lived for four generations. She’s looking for a new home. Her mother, Sherry, says people near the crash site are vulnerable to cancer and railroad operator Norfolk Southern should buy them out. Experts say living near a hazardous spill doesn’t necessarily elevate a person’s risk.

Man Killed In McKeesport Was Confidential Informant

March 12, 2023 8:06 am

MCKEESPORT, Pa. — Channel 11 News has uncovered new information about the shooting death of a 58-year-old McKeesport man last Friday night. According to multiple sources, officials confirmed that the victim, Bob Moore, was working as a confidential informant for the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office. Last year, according to multiple sources, Moore helped investigators bring down big cocaine, heroin and illegal sports gambling ring in McKeesport. The investigation led to charges against seven people, including the alleged ring leader, Curtis Harper Jr. According to the criminal complaint, two confidential informants made multiple undercover controlled buys of cocaine.  Sources tell Target 11 that Bob Moore was one of those confidential informants. Harper appeared at a preliminary hearing this past Monday and all charges against him were held for court. It’s unclear if Moore was supposed to testify at that preliminary hearing. Moore was gunned down while returning to his home last Friday just before 6 p.m. Police have said very little about the murder, but Target 11 learned that Moore had been working as a confidential informant in an 11-month undercover investigation into illegal drugs and illegal sports gambling. The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office declined to comment.

Time To “Spring Forward”

March 12, 2023 3:37 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — Standard time comes to an end in most parts of the United States this weekend. You’ll lose an hour of sleep for one night but gain more daylight in the evening in the months ahead. The transition to daylight saving time is official at 2 a.m. local time Sunday across much of the country. Then on March 20, winter sunsets and spring is sprung. Until daylight saving time ends in the wee hours of Nov. 5, the sun will rise later in the morning than than it has during standard time but it will stay light for longer until the evening. It’s a good idea to set clocks an hour ahead before bed Saturday night.  The American Red Cross is also reminding you that with the time change should come the testing of smoke alarms.  They say working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half.

3 Women Missing In Mexico After Crossing From Texas On Trip

March 11, 2023 6:57 am

PEÑITAS, Texas (AP) — U.S. authorities say three women haven’t been heard from since they traveled from Texas into Mexico two weeks ago. Peñitas Police Chief Roel Bermea said Friday the women crossed the border to sell clothes at a Mexican flea market on Feb. 24. Two of the women are sisters: 47-year-old Maritza Trinidad Perez Rios and 48-year-old Marina Perez Rios. They were accompanied by their friend, 53-year-old Dora Alicia Cervantes Saenz. Bermea said the sisters lived in Peñitas, a small border city. He did not know where the other woman lived. The episode stands in stark contrast to the government and media frenzy over the abduction of four Americans in Mexico last week.

Man Convicted Of Killing Kristin Smart Gets 25 Years To Life

March 11, 2023 6:52 am

MONTEREY, Calif. (AP) — The man convicted of killing Kristin Smart, who vanished from a California college campus in 1996, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. A judge in Monterey County sentenced Paul Flores on Friday, calling him “a cancer to society.” The judge also rejected requests from the defense to acquit Flores and order a new trial. Smart was 19 when she disappeared from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. Her remains have never been found, but prosecutors alleged Flores, a fellow student, killed her while trying to rape her in his dorm room. He was convicted in October. His father was accused of helping hide her body but was acquitted.

Bill Would Ban Marriages Under Age 16 In West Virginia

March 11, 2023 6:50 am

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – A bill addressing child marriage in West Virginia has passed the state Senate. The Senate easily passed the bill after it was changed to prohibit anyone younger than 16 from getting married. It now goes to the House of Delegates, which previously passed its own version. The legislative session ends Saturday. Currently, children can marry as young as 16 in West Virginia with parental consent, and anyone younger can get married with a judge’s waiver. The Senate bill would remove the possibility that anyone younger than 16 could marry. Those ages 16 and 17 would have to obtain parental consent and couldn’t marry someone more than four years older.
