A South Strabane Township man has finalized his case of alleged child luring. On Friday, Jan Ondra, 70 appeared in common pleas court and pleaded no contest to an amended charge of corruption of minors. Ondra was accused of child luring when he approached a child in East Bethlehem Township in 2019 telling them to “get in the van and I will take you home to your Daddy.” Ondra had been free on bond in this case when he was accused of approaching three other children in North Strabane Township several months later. Because of that, Ondra had his bond revoked. Later, Ondra had been freed from jail while appeals of his East Bethlehem Township case went all the way to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. In exchange for Ondra’s guilty plea, he was sentenced to time served to 23 months in jail. Ondra had been in jail for 114 days. He will spend the remainder of the 23 month sentence on parole.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks rushed higher after a strong report on the U.S. job market eased Wall Street’s worries about a possible recession. The S&P 500 jumped 1.5% Friday, while the Dow soared 701 points. The rally brought the S&P 500 nearly 20% above a low hit in October. It’s on the edge of entering a new bull market. The rally built after a report showed unexpectedly strong hiring last month. At the same time, increases for workers’ pay slowed. That could mean the economy remains strong enough to avoid a recession without adding too much upward pressure on inflation.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Teachers are leaving their jobs at an accelerating rate in Pennsylvania, amid fears of a nationwide exodus of burned-out teachers. A new analysis by Penn State’s Center for Education Evaluation and Policy Analysis shows that the rate of teacher attrition in Pennsylvania grew faster in the 2022-23 school year and hit its highest point in a decade of tracking. The past two years, schools saw relatively modest changes in attrition even as teachers reported more dissatisfaction with the job. Penn State education professor Ed Fuller says now that labor markets are tight and it’s much easier for teachers to find a job near where they live.
