In the feel-good moment of the night, the 66-year-old first time winner sang the opening of an empowering song, “Endangered Species.” It was an Emmy show that rewarded previous winners in several major categories: “Succession” and “Ted Lasso,” the big winners in drama and comedy, were repeat winners, as were a number of actors. Still, there were new and groundbreaking wins like that of actor Lee Jung-jae of “Squid Game,” the first Asian to win the award.

Seoul Says N. Korea Will Self-Destruct If It Uses Nukes

September 13, 2022 3:24 am

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea has warned North Korea’s government that using its nuclear weapons would put it on a “path of self-destruction.” It says recent legislation in North Korea allowing the preemptive use of its bombs would only prompt Seoul and Washington to bolster their joint military capabilities. The rhetoric from Seoul risks angering North Korea and could further deepen animosities between the rivals. South Korea has typically shunned harsh language to avoid tensions on the Korean Peninsula. South Korea’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday that South Korea will sharply boost its own preemptive attack plans, missile defense and massive retaliation capabilities while seeking a greater U.S. security commitment.

Rain & Mudslides Prompt California Evacuations

September 13, 2022 3:23 am

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Heavy rains unleashed mudslides in a mountain area east of Los Angeles that burned two years ago, sending boulders and other debris across roads and prompting evacuation and shelter-in-place orders for thousands of residents. Firefighters went street by street in the community of Forest Falls Monday to make sure no residents were trapped. Crews hadn’t found anyone who needed to be rescued and no one was reported missing. The rains were the remnants of a tropical storm that brought high winds and some badly needed rainfall to drought-stricken Southern California last week, helping firefighters largely corral a wildfire that had been burning out of control about 20 miles south of the mudslides.
