Pakistan Carries Out Airstrikes Over Border Dispute

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s military has struck deeper into Afghanistan as border fighting intensifies and both sides claim to have inflicted heavy losses. Today, Pakistani officials said their artillery and air power hit Afghan military sites and killed more than 300 Afghan forces. Afghanistan rejected the number as false. The clashes started Thursday night after Afghanistan launched a cross-border attack. Afghanistan said it responded to earlier Pakistani airstrikes that killed civilians. Afghan officials rejected Pakistan’s casualty claims and said they hit Pakistani bases instead. Residents near the Torkham crossing fled and refugees reported shortages during Ramadan. Several countries, including Qatar, pushed for mediation.
