VATICAN CITY (AP) — Two days after being discharged from the hospital, Pope Francis resumed his cherished Sunday custom of greeting the public in St. Peter’s Square. He began the window appearance by saying the human and spiritual closeness he felt while hospitalized for abdominal surgery gave him “great comfort.” Thousands of pilgrims and tourists in the square exploded in applause when he came to the window. Francis sounded a bit breathless at times, but seemed delighted to be back. At the end, the crowd erupted in shouts of “Long live the pope!” and the pope quickly said, “Thanks” before leaving the window. Francis also expressed sorrow for the migrant boat shipwreck off Greece and decried the attack on students in Uganda.
