South Strabane Township supervisors held a hearing in which they discussed both a data center ordinance and a noise and dust ordinance. Prior to a vote, the public had a chance to address the board with comments and concerns. Many South Strabane residents cited public health, pollution, and energy use as concerns. On the other hand, some residents were pleased with the ordinances, and they thanked the supervisors for their diligent work. There was a unanimous vote by the supervisors to approve both ordinances. Stipulations of the ordinances require data centers and affiliated buildings to not be located within 1500 feet of an occupied structure. Waste water usage, electrical needs, and emergency management needs were also addressed. As a companion ordinance, the noise and dust ordinance was amended to address daytime and nighttime limits to noise and vibrations. The attorney representing CNX Inc., Robert Max Junker, was in agreement with much of the ordinance. However, he did push back on the 1500-foot setback and he sought to have building sizes increase from 125,000 square feet to 250,000 or 350,000 square feet. Supervisor chairman George Rowand feels that it is a fair ordinance for residents and CNX. He said that they could not wait for a moratorium to be established, and the current ordinance offers protections for everyone in the township.
