Suspect Dead After Opening Fire Near White House

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Secret Service says a man who opened fire near a White House security checkpoint is dead. It was the third incidence of gunfire in the vicinity of President Donald Trump in the past month. The agency says in a statement Saturday that a preliminary investigation found the man was near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue when he pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing. Its officers returned fire. The suspect died later at a hospital. A bystander also was shot. Trump was at the White House at the time. Secret Service said he was not “impacted.”
