The WPIAL Football Playoff brackets were released Saturday afternoon. Washington/Greene County has 11 teams included in the pairings, six of those in the 1A bracket. Avella, Bentworth, California, Chartiers-Houston, Fort Cherry and Jeff-Morgan in the 1A field will be joined by Wash High and Waynesburg in the 2A bracket, 4A Trinity, 5A Peters Township and 6A Canon-McMillan. Fort Cherry, the two-time defending WPIAL champion, is the top seed and will host #16 Avella, a wild card entry. #7 Bentworth will host a WPIAL playoff game for the first time in 27 years, entertaining #10 Jeannette. #12 Chartiers-Houston visits #5 South Side Area as the Bucs seek their first playoff win since beating Clairton in the opening round 25 years ago. Wash High is seeded fifth in the 2A bracket and will host #12 Beaver Falls in the schools’ fourth playoff meeting. Waynesburg won three of its last four to get a wild card invitation. The #13 Raiders travel to #4 South Allegheny. The winners of those two 2A games meet in the quarterfinals. #2 Trinity is home with #7 Aliquippa, a rematch of last year’s opening round game at Aliquippa. The Hillers won the Big Six title while Aliquippa needed a wild card invitation to get in. Peters Township has a first-round bye in the 12-team 5A bracket and await the Bethel Park/North Hills winner. 6A Canon-McMillan is the last team to get in, surviving a three-way tie with Mt. Lebanon and Seneca Valley. The Big Macs are off this week, then play #1 Central Catholic in the semifinals.
