’24 PONY World Series Saturday

The 2024 Printscape PONY League World Series included a pair of run-rule games and a pitchers’ duel at Lew Hays PONY Field. Tijuana, MX sprinted past Bay County, MI, then Bronx, NY never let Gijon, Spain get traction in its PLWS debut, both games ending in five innings.  Chinese Taipei got past Palmview, TX, breaking a fifth-inning tie with a two-out wild pitch scoring the go-ahead run.

Tijuana, MX 13, Bay County, MI 0
Romeo Briones homered twice, including a grand slam, helping the Mexico champions cruise to a run-rule win. Tijuana sent nine batters to the plate in the second, scoring five times, before adding a single run in the third. In the fourth, with the bases loaded, Briones delivered the 49th all-time World Series grand slam, the third by a player from Mexico. Back-to-back doubles from Alexander Jimenez and Santiago Retamoza plated two more runs before Briones blasted a solo shot in the fifth. Bay County managed just two hits, both singles, in falling into the elimination bracket.

Bronx, NY 11, Gijon, Spain 0
Fausto Dominguez drove in three runs, Jeremias Perez and Misael Acosta added two RBI each, helping the East Zone champions to the win. Bronx scored three times in each of the first three innings, then added a pair in the fourth to trigger the run-rule. Gijon got singles from Carlos Gonzalez and Petr Dusek, the only hit for Spain in its debut appearance at the World Series.

Chinese Taipei 4, Palmview 2
Tied at two, the Asia-Pacific champions took advantage of multiple gifts in the fifth inning to advance in the winners’ bracket. Lin, Liang-Kai was hit by a hit and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw. Wu, Chieh-Jui popped up a bunt that was dropped by the catcher. After a passed ball and a strikeout, losing pitcher Gael Zambrano uncorked a wild pitch to plate the go-ahead run. Chinese Taipei us another wild pitch to add an insurance marker tin the sixth.  C-T converted a first inning walk and hit batter with a single by Wu and Chen, Hsuan-Chi’s ground out to lead 2-0, a score that held into the fourth inning. With a runner aboard, Axel Pulido homered to left to tie the game.
