(AP) – The Los Angeles Angels couldn’t have found a better way to honor a passing teammate.
Playing their first home game since the death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs, Taylor Cole and Felix Pena combined on a no-hitter as the Angels battered the Mariners, 13-0. Cole opened with two perfect innings before Pena came on to hold Seattle to just one walk in the Angels’ 11th no-hitter in team history. Mike Trout unloaded a two-run homer while Los Angeles erupted for eight runs on seven hits in the first inning. Trout finished with six RBIs on the day before what would have been Skaggs’ 28th birthday. Skaggs’ jersey hung in his untouched in his clubhouse locker, his pristine cleats and gloves ready for a ballgame. Manager Brad Ausmus said Skaggs remains a part of the team, even though he’s not with them. Skaggs’ mother, Debbie concluded the pregame ceremony by firing a strike on the first pitch.
