The WPIAL Basketball Quarterfinals wrapped up Friday with the Chartiers-Houston girls winning to reach the semifinals. Sophomore Mackenzie Walsh led the Bucs with 20 points, hitting 13-of-16 free throws along the way, in the win over defending WPIAL champion Aliquippa. Fort Cherry and Burgettstown both lost in the 2A Girls bracket and drop into the consolation bracket, each needing one win to qualify for the state tournament. Ringgold boys lost a one-point game to Hampton and also fall into a consolation bracket. The Rams, though, already have a state tournament bid in hand. In consolation action, Waynesburg was eliminated from the 3A Girls bracket, losing at OLSH. The Trinity girls have already clinched a PIAA bid but lost to Baldwin and will play for 7th place on Tuesday.
The semifinals got underway Saturday. Defending state champion South Fayette, the top seed in the 5A girls bracket, sprinted past Peters Township, dropping the defending WPIAL champions into the third-place game. Juliette Leroux scored 20 points, one of four Lions in double figures. Throughout the WPIAL playoffs, our audio coverage is available free on-air and online.
