Bentworth Sweeps 1A Soccer Championships

The Bentworth girls & boys soccer teams swept WPIAL 1A championship matches Thursday night. The girls won their first-ever WPIAL title, beating #1 Sewickley Academy, 1-0. The boys claimed their third straight crown, beating Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 3-1.

The girls match went scoreless deep into the second half when Brielle Dillon’s swept the ball forward and through the legs of the Panthers’ goal keeper with just 93 seconds left. Madelyn Johns was credited with the assist. Just moments earlier, Bentworth goalie Julia Brandau and defender Meredith Allender stopped a Sewickley corner kick on the goal line. The Bentworth girls will take on the District 5 runner-up in the first round of the PIAA playoffs on Tuesday.

Ryan Moessner scored twice, Adam Moessner had a goal and an assist as the boys delivered on a three-peat, topping OLSH for the second straight year in the finals. Ryan Moessner took a long feed from his brother nd scored less than three minutes into the match. Andre Kolocouris scored off a corner kick for the Chargers in the 25th minute, tying the match. Adam Moessner was set up by Caden Hackinson, breaking the tie with just under 10 minutes to play in the half.  The Bearcats’ final goal came early in the second half, again, Ryan finding the net on a feed from Billy Moyer.  Ryan Moessner now has 55 goals on the year, 143 in his career at Bentworth. The boys will play the District 10 champion Tuesday in the PIAA first round.
