PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin’s right forearm strain is improving, and the 20-year-old is hoping to return at some point in the near future. Griffin initially reported discomfort after a game against the Chicago Cubs on May 27. He played as a designated hitter before going on the injured list on May 31. The team expected a brief stay, but the injury was more severe than anticipated. Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said imaging showed Griffin’s UCL is stable. Griffin hopes to start a throwing program soon. Griffin is hitting .270 with four home runs in 51 games since making his major league debut in early April.
