January 25, 2024 4:47 am

Five players from Canada’s 2018 world junior team have taken a leave of absence from their current clubs in recent days. NHL players Michael McLeod and Cal Foote of the New Jersey Devils, Carter Hart of the Philadelphia Flyers, Dillon Dube of the Calgary Flames and former NHL player Alex Formenton now with Swiss club Ambri-Piotta all have been granted leave in recent days. Police in London, Ontario, launched an investigation in 2022 after word emerged that Hockey Canada settled a lawsuit with a woman who said she was sexually assaulted by several members of that team at a gala. The Globe & Mail reported Wednesday that five players from that team were asked to surrender to face charges of sexual assault.

Rhys Hoskins And Brewers Agree To A $34 Million, 2-year Contract

January 24, 2024 3:35 am

Rhys Hoskins and the Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a $34 million, two-year contract, filling the team’s opening at first base. A person familiar with the move confirmed it to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical. Milwaukee won the NL Central last year with a 92-70 record before getting eliminated by Arizona in their Wild Card Series. The addition of Hoskins gives the Brewers another power bat for the middle of their lineup. They had Rowdy Tellez and Carlos Santana at first base in 2023, but they let go of Tellez after the season and he signed with Pittsburgh in December. Santana remains a free agent.

Penguins Fall In Arizona

January 23, 2024 4:33 am

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Lawson Crouse scored a bizarre goal in the third period, Connor Ingram stopped 25 shots and the Arizona Coyotes ended an 11-game losing streak to the Pittsburgh Penguins with a 5-2 win. Crouse was credited with a goal on a delayed penalty by the Coyotes when Evgeni Malkin mishandled a pass from Kris Letang and the puck trickled into the empty net. Crouse was the last Arizona player to touch the puck and earned the power-play goal that put the Coyotes up 4-2. The gaffe marred Sidney Crosby’s 577th career goal, which tied him with Mark Recchi for 21st place on the NHL’s all-time goals list.

Chapman gives the Pirates an experienced left-hander to work in a potential set-up role for All-Star closer David Bednar. The 14-year veteran, who turns 36 next month, has 321 career saves while playing for five teams but has evolved into a set-up man over the last two seasons.
