ST. LOUIS (AP) — Thomas Saggese hit a go-ahead RBI double and Jordan Walker homered in a three-run seventh inning to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1. Miles Mikolas allowed one run on four hits and a walk and struck out five in five innings. Kyle Leahy recorded four strikeouts in two scoreless innings of relief, Riley O’Brien pitched a scoreless eighth and JoJo Romero pitched the ninth for his fifth save. Pirates rookie Braxton Ashcraft allowed one run on four hits and recorded five strikeouts in a career-best 5 2/3 innings before being replaced by Yohan Ramírez.

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Las Vegas coach Pete Carroll has assembled a Raiders roster full of players with something to prove. Backup quarterback Kenny Pickett is a prime example. Carroll praised Pickett’s adaptability, noting his quick grasp of new systems despite frequent trades. Pickett has moved from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia, then to Cleveland and now to Las Vegas. He was drafted by the Steelers in 2022 but didn’t meet expectations. Pickett hopes to find stability with the Raiders, learning from Geno Smith’s career revival under Carroll. The Raiders acquired Pickett after Aidan O’Connell’s injury.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jay Wright has decided to step away from being a full-time television analyst after three years to devote more time to his other position at Villanova University. Wright was hired by CBS Sports and TNT Sports as a college basketball analyst in 2022. He was a game analyst during the regular season before moving to the studio for the NCAA Tournament. Wright was named a special assistant to the president at Villanova after his retirement. In that role he is involved with fund raising, advising and education.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) — Cameron Pettaway returned the opening kickoff for a 98-yard touchdown and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George coached his first FBS win as Bowling Green beat Lafayette 26-7. For the second straight year, Bowling Green scored on the game’s opening kickoff. Bowling Green combined for 156 yards on the ground, led by Kaderris Roberts’ 66 yards on 12 carries. Dean Denobile was 13 of 26 for 111 yards and a touchdown. Jackson Kleather connected from 30- and 35-yards out and hit a career-long 56-yard kick.The Falcons’ defense combined for seven tackles for loss and three sacks. Drew Pyne connected on 12 of his 18 passes for 109 yards for Bowling Green. The game was delayed for 42 minutes due to lightning.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Bubba Chandler has lived up to the hype so far. Chandler led the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, pitching four scoreless innings of relief in his second major league game. The 6-foot-3 right-hander allowed one hit, struck out three and walked one. The 22-year-old Chandler got the win after he picked up the save in his Pittsburgh debut on Friday night against Colorado. He also worked four scoreless innings against the Rockies. Chandler’s arrival has provided a glimmer of hope for Pittsburgh in another lost season. He could join Paul Skenes in a potentially formidable rotation for the Pirates as soon as next year.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Drew Allar and Andy Kotelnicki have developed quite the quarterback-coach tandem in their 18 months together. Their partnership has grown to the point where Kotelnicki, Penn State’s second-year offensive coordinator, let Allar plan out most of what the No. 2 Nittany Lions would drill during their final training camp practices last week. The fast-talking Kotelnicki and head coach James Franklin have been impressed. They’ve seen enough to know Allar’s improved command of the offense will give the Nittany Lions a shot at another deep run the College Football Playoff.

Henry Davis homered, Bryan Reynolds hit a pair of doubles and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-3. Mitch Keller allowed three runs on three hits and struck out nine in six innings for the Pirates, who have won five of six. Andre Pallante allowed eight runs, seven of them earned, in five innings. He is 0-4 with a 11.65 ERA over 17 innings in his last four starts. Nolan Gorman hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, his 13th of the season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers made their final cuts to their roster on Tuesday. They were required to be down to their 53 man limit by 4:00 pm. Several well known players were included on the list. Released by the Steelers were LB/DE DeMarvin Leal, DB Beanie Bishop Jr. and WR Robert Woods. Making the team was QB Will Howard who will start the season on the reserve injured list. That means QB Skylar Thompson will be the number 3 quarterback.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated left-hander Andrew Heaney for assignment and activated center fielder Oneil Cruz from the concussion injured list. Heaney allowed five earned runs in the fifth inning Monday night in a 7-6 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. The 34-year-old was signed in the offseason by the Pirates to a one-year deal. Cruz collided with left fielder Jack Suwinski on Aug. 13 while diving for a ball. The Pirates also recalled right-hander Dauri Moreta from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioned Ronny Simon to Indianapolis.
