Five Washington County 3A wrestlers won opening-round bouts to move to Friday’s quarterfinals. Canon-McMillan teammates Collier Hartman and Andrew Binni, Trinity’s Blake Reihner and Bode Morgan, along with Ringgold’s Jake Conroy are into the championship bracket second round. The two-county area lost only one of the 13 wrestlers entered as Trinity’s Robbie Allison defaulted in his opening bout while leading and was not able to wrestle in the consolation round.
Four Canon-McMillan wrestlers have advanced to the first-ever PIAA girls quarterfinals with Thursday afternoon first-round wins. Valarie Solorio, Dynisty Williams, Audrey Calgaro and Nattalie Rush all won their opening-round bouts for the Big Macs. They will be joined by Abigail Dolanch (Fort Cherry), Grace O’Korn (Peters Township) and Anna Duncan (Ringgold) in Friday’s quarterfinals. Six other girls from Washington County will face elimination bouts Friday as well.
Three Washington County 2A wrestlers have advanced to the quarterfinals at the PIAA Wrestling Championships. Jorden Williams (Chartiers-Houston), Chris Vargo (Bentworth) and Joey Baronick (Burgettstown) were Round of 16 winners to stay in the championship half of their brackets. Ten additional wrestlers from the two-county are won at least one match on Thursday and are in the Round II consolations Friday morning. Two of the 13 Washington County starters lost twice and have been eliminated: Drake McClure (Bentworth) and Emmett Wolfe (McGuffey).

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jake Guentzel is heading to Carolina. The Pittsburgh Penguins traded the high-scoring forward to the Hurricanes in exchange for forward Michael Bunting, three prospects and two conditional 2024 draft picks. The 29-year-old Guentzel gives the Hurricanes a proven goal scorer who thrives in the postseason spotlight. Guentzel has reached the 40-goal plateau twice in eight seasons and has 58 points in 58 playoff games. His 13 goals during the 2017 playoffs led the league and helped the Penguins become the first team in nearly 20 years to win back-to-back Stanley Cups.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Tom Wilson scored just hours after the death of grandfather, Alex Ovechkin scored his 840th career goal and added an assist and the Washington Capitals drilled the reeling Pittsburgh Penguins 6-0. Ovechkin’s two points moved him past Hall of Fame defenseman Paul Coffey and into 15th on the NHL’s career scoring list. He has 1,532 career points. Nick Jensen, Sonny Milano and rookies Hendrix Lapierre and Ivan Miroshnichenko also scored for the Capitals. Charlie Lindgren stopped 39 shots. The Penguins have dropped four of five and were shut out for the fourth time this season. After the game it was announced they had traded star forward Jake Guentzel to Carolina.

The PIAA Individual Wrestling Championship Series has reached it final destination, the Giant Center in Hershey. Thursday-Saturday, the PIAA will host three complete tournaments, including the first-ever Girls Championships. Action starts Thursday morning with the 2A Boys preliminaries and ends Saturday afternoon with the Championship Finals. Washington/Greene Counties are sending 15 wrestlers for the 2A boys brackets, 13 for 3A boys and 13 for the girls tournament. The WJPA Sports Network will have live coverage as we have for 75 years. Dejah Terrell scored 25 points helping the PennWest California women to a 57-54 win at IUP. The Vulcans led 26-12 early in the second quarter, then gave up a 26-5 run to trail by seven. Cal U outscored the Crimson Hawks 17-9 over the final 10 minutes to advance to the PSAC Semifinals at East top seed Lock Haven. Cal U will play the host Saturday afternoon.
KJ McClurg led four players in doubles figures as the Cal U men sprinted past Slippery Rock, 91-57. McClurg pumped in 22 points. The Vulcans led 44-22 at the half and cruised to a spot in the PSAC Semifinals against Lock Haven. West #1 Gannon will host the Men’s PSAC Final Four at the Hagerty Family Events Center in Erie.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers have released safety Keanu Neal after he failed a physical with the team. Neal played in nine games for the Steelers in 2023, eight of them starts. He suffered a rib injury in a win over Green Bay on Nov. 12 when he was hit at the end of a 32-yard interception return in the fourth quarter. The team placed Neal on injured reserve on Nov. 18. The 28-year-old Neal signed a two-year, $4.25 million deal with the Steelers last March. He had 50 tackles, a fumble recovery, and an interception with Pittsburgh.

Stanley Cup contenders aren’t waiting until the NHL trade deadline day to shore up depth for what they hope is a long playoff run. The league-leading Florida Panthers got deeper on the wing by acquiring Vladimir Tarasenko from Ottawa. Connor McDavid’s Edmonton Oilers added a pair of centers in Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick from Anaheim. The New York Rangers added a player they coveted in Alexander Wennberg from Seattle. And Colorado loaded up by getting defenseman Sean Walker from Philadelphia and center Casey Mittelstadt from Buffalo. There is plenty of speculation the Penguins will move forward Jake Guentzel before the deadline.

PennWest California basketball teams head to the PSAC quarterfinals Wednesday, the women on the road, the men at home at the Convocation Center. The Cal U women, sixth in the current regional rankings, head to Indiana. The Vulcans topped Seton Hill, 70-65, Monday night to advance while Indiana had a first-round bye. The Cal U men, second in the Feb. 29 rankings, had an opening-round bye, and will host Slippery Rock. SRU edged Seton Hill, 71-69, Monday night. Both games tip at 6 pm. Winner advance to the conference semifinals. The highest remaining East team will host the Women’s semifinals/finals. The PSAC Men’s final four will gather at the West’s highest remaining seed.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Blake Hinson scored 27 points and Jaland Lowe scored 17 points and Pittsburgh controlled most of the way and beat Florida State 88-73. Cam Corhen scored 25 points shooting 8 for 12; 9 for 10 from the foul line for Pitt. Following Pitt’s 42-31 halftime lead, the Panthers went on a 13-4 run to start to extend their margin to 53-35 in the first three minutes of the half. Florida State closed the gap to 56-49 with a jump shot from Watkins but the Seminoles never got closer. Pitt reached the 20-win mark for the second straight season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jeff Carter and Reilly Smith scored just over a minute apart midway through the third period and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3. The Blue Jackets tied it earlier in the period on a short-handed goal by Jack Roslovic before Carter and Smith beat rookie goaltender Jet Greaves to give the Penguins some breathing room. Evgeni Malkin, Rickard Rakell and Jesse Puljujarvi also scored for Pittsburgh. The Penguins are 10-0-1 in their last 11 games against Columbus. Johnny Gaudreau and Andrew Peeke also had goals for the Blue Jackets.
