Brewers Hold Off Pirates After Long Rain Delay

May 23, 2025 4:29 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Christian Yelich homered twice and the Milwaukee Brewers breezed past the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-5 in a game interrupted by rain. Yelich hit a three-run drive against rookie Mike Burrows and a solo shot off reliever Isaac Mattson for the 11th multi-homer game of his career. Spencer Horwitz had two hits and two RBIs for the Pirates, including a solo shot in the fourth inning for his first home run this season. The Pirates did manage to avoid making major league history. Pittsburgh scored at least five runs for the first time in 27 games, leaving the team tied with four others for the longest such drought.

Cherington Says Trading Skenes Is Not On The Table

May 23, 2025 4:27 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The last-place Pittsburgh Pirates have no interest in trading young ace Paul Skenes. General manager Ben Cherington says moving the 22-year-old Skenes is “not part of the conversation at all.” The Pirates are already 11 games out of playoff position before Memorial Day thanks in large part to an offense that ranks near the bottom of the majors in nearly every major category. While the Pirates have a deep pool of pitching prospects, they are lacking in quality young position players in the minors. Trading Skenes might help, but Cherington says that discussion is a non-starter. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year is 3-5 with a 2.44 ERA in 2025.

Pirates Make It Two In A Row With Win Over Reds

May 22, 2025 4:29 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Andrew Heaney and four relievers combined on a four-hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates edged Cincinnati 3-1. Heaney allowed a run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings of work Wednesday to win for the first time in nearly a month. Dennis Santana worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save as the Pirates took two of three from Cincinnati. Henry Davis had two hits for Pittsburgh, including an RBI-single in the fourth off Brady Singer.

Jared Jones Undergoes Season Ending Elbow Surgery

May 22, 2025 4:26 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates’ right-handed pitcher Jared Jones has undergone elbow surgery and will not return in 2025. The 23-year-old Jones initially complained of elbow pain in mid-March. The decision to have surgery came after Jones complained of discomfort in the elbow during his rehab. The extent of the damage to the elbow wasn’t initially known. Though the team has not put a firm timetable on a possible return, Jones will be out for at least the remainder of this season. The 23-year-old Jones made the Pirates out of spring training in 2024 and pitched well, going 6-8 with a 4.14 ERA.

NFL Teams Can Keep Using The Tush Push

May 22, 2025 4:31 am

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — NFL owners narrowly failed to pass a proposal to prohibit the tush push. The fate of the short-yardage strategy was on the agenda at their spring meetings. The ban on offensive players from pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping or encircling a runner was supported by a 22-10 vote, according to a person with knowledge of the proceedings, speaking on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because details weren’t made public. That’s two short of the three-quarters majority required by league bylaws. Health and safety committees for the players and owners and the league’s competition committee all unanimously recommended the proposal.

Colts Owner Jim Irsay Dies At 65

May 22, 2025 4:32 am

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jim Irsay, the Indianapolis Colts’ owner who leveraged the popularity of Peyton Manning into a new stadium and a Super Bowl title, died Wednesday at age 65. Pete Ward, Irsay’s longtime right-hand man and the teams chief operating officer, made the announcement in a statement from the team. He said Irsay died peacefully in his sleep. “Jim’s dedication and passion for the Indianapolis Colts in addition to his generosity, commitment to the community, and most importantly, his love for his family were unsurpassed,” Ward said. “Our deepest sympathies go to his daughters, Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, Kalen Jackson, and his entire family as we grieve with them.”

Pirates Wrap-Up Home-Stand With A 3-1 Win Over The Cincinnati Reds

May 21, 2025 5:18 pm

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Andrew Heaney and four relievers combined on a four-hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates edged Cincinnati 3-1 on Wednesday.  Heaney (3-3) allowed a run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings of work to win for the first time in nearly a month.
