WASHINGTON (AP) — James Wood scored the go-ahead run from first base when center fielder Oneil Cruz misplayed Dayton Lile’s eighth-inning double, and the Washington Nationals overcame a three-run, first-inning deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3. Pittsburgh finished a 1-5 trip that assured the Pirates their seventh straight losing season and 29th in 33 years. The Pirates had runners at the corners in the ninth before rookie Clayton Beeter struck out Bryan Reynolds for his first big league save. Washington took two of three from the Pirates and has won nine of its last 13 games.

NEW YORK (AP) — Texas A&M made a big jump into the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll Sunday after its dramatic win at Notre Dame, and the Irish became the first team since 1988 to stay in the Top 25 with an 0-2 record. Ohio State, Penn State and LSU remained the top three teams, with Miami moving up to No. 4 and Georgia to No. 5 even after a close call at No. 15 Tennessee. Oregon slipped two spots to No. 6 despite a 20-point road win against Northwestern and was followed by Florida State, Texas, Illinois and the Aggies.

Washington & Jefferson battled back from a two-score deficit to tie the game at halftime. But, for the second straight game, the Presidents defense was torched for three touchdowns in the third quarter, and W&J fell to Hampden-Sydney, 38-31, Saturday afternoon. W&J pulled within a touchdown with eight minutes to play, then got the ball back late with a chance to tie. The Presidents drive ended at the HSC 15-yard line after a would-be touchdown pass was called back on a holding penalty. W&J is 0-2 to start a season for the first time since 1997. Andrew Sharp led the W&J offense with 119 yards rushing and a touchdown. Kellan Stahl passed for 281 yards and one score and added 65 yards rushing and another touchdown. John Peduzzi caught 11 passes for 112 yards. W&J is off before visiting Grove City Saturday, September 27.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pirates rookie right-hander Bubba Chandler turns 23 on Sunday. He started celebrating one day earlier. Chandler, making his second major league start, took a perfect game into the sixth inning to help the Pirates snap a seven-game losing streak with a 5-1 win against the Washington Nationals on Saturday. He allowed a run and two hits over six innings, striking out seven without a walk while throwing 81 pitches. Chandler allowed a leadoff single to Dylan Crews to start the sixth and Crews later scored on a single by Robert Hassell III to give Washington a 1-0 lead they held until the eighth. After Chandler departed the Pirates got two-run singles from Andrew McCutchen and Nick Yorke in the eighth inning and a solo homer from Jared Triola in the ninth to end their skid. (Photo: AP)

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Tye Edwards rushed for three touchdowns, including a 1-yarder in overtime to lift West Virginia to a 31-24 win over Pittsburgh. West Virginia improves to 2-1 and bounced back from a pitiful performance a week ago at Ohio. Quarterback Nicco Marchiol was benched for five series in the second half before leading West Virginia on a furious comeback. The Mountaineers scored 10 points in the final five minutes of regulation to send it to overtime. STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Drew Allar threw for 209 yards and a touchdown and No. 2 Penn State got another near flawless effort from its defense in a 52-6 win over Villanova. Nicholas Singleton ran for two touchdowns, Kaytron Allen added another, Trebor Peña caught a touchdown, and Ryan Barker kicked three field goals. Linebacker Tony Rojas had two sacks for the Nittany Lions (3-0) who came one play shy of posting back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1996. WASHINGTON (AP) — Dylan Crews hit a two-run homer, James Wood threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth inning and the Washington Nationals edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Friday night. Josh Bell added a two-run double for the Nationals, who took a 6-3 lead with a four-run seventh, highlighted by Crews’ ninth homer. Wood allowed a ball hit by Nick Gonzales in the ninth to land over his head in left field for a ground-rule double. But when Joey Bart singled with runners on second and third and one out, Wood nailed Alexander Canario at the plate with a 93 mph throw to keep it at 6-5.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Marc-Andre Fleury is ending his NHL career where it began. The veteran goaltender, who retired last spring after a 21-year career, has signed a professional tryout contract with the Penguins. He will suit up for Pittsburgh’s exhibition game against Columbus on September 27. The 40-year-old Fleury was taken No. 1 overall by the Penguins in the 2003 NHL draft. He spent 13 seasons in Pittsburgh, helping the team win three Stanley Cups. Fleury left after being selected by Vegas in the expansion draft in 2017. He holds nearly every major goaltending record in Penguins history.

PITTSBURGH — Marc-Andre Fleury will return to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a special appearance, signing a professional tryout contract to play parts of an exhibition game. The Penguins announced Fleury’s return, highlighting his significance to the team and the city. Fleury, a three-time Stanley Cup champion with Pittsburgh, will join the team for practice on Sept. 26 before suiting up for the exhibition game against Columbus on Sept. 27 at PPG Paints Arena. “The entire Penguins organization is honored to welcome Marc-Andre Fleury back to the ice in Pittsburgh,” said Kyle Dubas, President of Hockey Operations and General Manager of the Penguins. Fleury, 40, is celebrated for his remarkable career in the NHL, having played 22 years with four teams: Pittsburgh, Vegas, Chicago, and Minnesota. His tenure includes 1,051 regular-season games with a record of 575 wins, 339 losses, and 97 ties, along with 76 shutouts.
