OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — Sam Burns has the lead in the U.S. Open on a rain-soaked Oakmont course and faces his biggest test. The 28-year-old from Louisiana has never contended in 20 previous majors. He shot a 69 with a late birdie and a great lag putt for par. That gives him a one-shot lead over Adam Scott. The Australian shot a 67 to finish one shot behind. Scott is the only player in top 10 who has won a major. J.J. Spaun shot 69 and also was one back. Viktor Hovland was the other survivor to par. He was three back.

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — Sam Burns avoided the late meltdown that cost him in the first round of the U.S. Open. He had a 65 and has a one-shot lead at Oakmont. Best of all he was long gone before the calamity set in at Oakmont. It was a long day with rounds approaching six hours. And it was a wild finish. Rory McIlroy threw a club and smashed a tee marker. Phil Mickelson missed the cut with a pair of double bogeys in what might be his final U.S. Open. Scottie Scheffler couldn’t find a fairway and was seven shots behind.

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — Phil Mickelson’s 34th appearance at the U.S. Open was short-lived. The six-time runner-up shot a second straight 4-over 74 to miss the cut at Oakmont by a stroke. There’s a chance Mickelson may never compete at the one major championship his resume is missing again. Mickelson’s five-year exemption into the U.S. Open he received for winning the 2021 PGA Championship is expiring. The USGA could offer him an exemption next year when the tournament heads to Shinnecock, one of several avenues of possibility for Mickelson to return. The six-time major champion isn’t saying. He declined to speak to reporters after his round.

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — J.J. Spaun is the U.S. Open leader at Oakmont after a relatively calm day compared with everyone else. Spaun played bogey-free for a 66 that matches the lowest opening round for a U.S. Open at Oakmont. He leads by one over Thriston Lawrence. Brooks Koepka is back in the major mix with a 68. So is Jon Rahm at 69. They were among 10 players to break par, so Oakmont was plenty tough. Scottie Scheffler made five bogeys in his round of 73. Rory McIlroy shot a 41 on his second nine and shot 74. Oakmont was as tough as advertised.

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — The star of this U.S. Open is Oakmont. Rory McIlroy had a peaceful start to his final day of practice with the sun rising on the horizon. The chaos begins when the score starts to count in the opening round Thursday. Oakmont is reputed to be the toughest course in the land. The U.S. Open prides itself on being the toughest test in golf. Scottie Scheffler is the favorite. He’s coming off three wins in his last four starts. That includes the PGA Championship. U.S. Open official says they don’t try to protect par. Oakmont usually does that for them.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Andrew McCutchen hit a milestone three-run home run in the fifth inning to help the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Miami Marlins 5-2 on Wednesday. McCutchen’s shot to left-center field off Cal Quantrill was his sixth of the season and 241st in 12 seasons with the Pirates, moving him past Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente into third place on the franchise’s career list. Willie Stargell (475) and Ralph Kiner (301) are ahead of McCutchen. The homer put the Pirates ahead 4-0 after they scored a run on catcher Nick Fortes’ throwing error in the second inning. Pittsburgh took two of three in the series, went 6-3 on the homestand and sent the Marlins to their eighth loss in 10 games. Bailey Falter (5-3) allowed one run — on rookie Heriberto Hernandez’s first career homer — on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. The left-hander is 4-0 with a 1.61 ERA in eight starts since the beginning of May.
