SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has been detained by police and admitted to a mental health clinic in the Dominican Republic. Authorities said on Tuesday his family requested the move, and it is not linked to any legal issues. Earlier this year, Franco was found guilty of sexually abusing a minor and received a two-year suspended sentence. Last weekend, he reported $16,000 stolen from a resort, but his attorney later claimed the money was found. Franco disagreed, insisting it had been stolen. His future in Major League Baseball remains uncertain, although he says he is still training.

CHICAGO (AP) — J.J. McCarthy threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes and ran for another in his long-awaited NFL debut, and the Minnesota Vikings rallied for a season-opening 27-24 win over the Chicago Bears. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers let Aaron Rodgers get ready for the season at his own pace. The four-time MVP repaid that trust with a four-touchdown performance against the New York Jets in his first game in black and gold. The Steelers won 34-32, proving Rodgers still has plenty to offer at 41. Tomlin expressed confidence in Rodgers, who felt he needed to prove himself after being let go by the Jets. On Monday night, Tyler Glasnow and Blake Treinen held the Colorado Rockies hitless through eight innings. Ryan Ritter’s double against Tanner Scott in the ninth broke the bid. The Dodgers rallied for a 3-1 victory, maintaining their one-game lead over San Diego in the NL West. Glasnow struck out 11 over seven innings in his first career start against Colorado. Scott secured his 21st save after Ritter’s hit. On Saturday, Yoshinobu Yamamoto lost a no-hitter in the ninth against Baltimore, who won 4-3.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes in his Steelers debut, leading Pittsburgh to a 34-32 victory over the New York Jets. Chris Boswell kicked a go-ahead, career-long 60-yard field goal with just over a minute remaining. The Jets, in coach Aaron Glenn’s debut, had a chance to win but fell short. Justin Fields, also playing against his former team, ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. (AP) — Josh Allen led Buffalo to three scores in the final four minutes, the last a 32-yard field goal by Matt Prater as time expired, and the Bills rallied from 15 points down to stun the Baltimore Ravens 41-40 in a season-opening thriller. Buffalo scored 16 points in the last 3:56, with Prater’s kick capping a nine-play, 66-yard drive over the final 1:26. Allen went 33 of 46 for 394 yards with two touchdowns and scored two more rushing in a matchup of the NFL’s past two MVPs. He spoiled a strong performance by Lamar Jackson, the 2023 MVP who threw for two scores and ran for another.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Andrew Vaughn had four hits and Jacob Misiorowski cruised through seven innings as the Milwaukee Brewers scored nine runs off top prospect Bubba Chandler to complete a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 10-2 win Sunday. Chandler (2-1) let up nine hits and three walks with three strikeouts in his first major-league start after making three appearances out of the bullpen. Jacob Misiorowski (5-2) allowed one run and three hits, striking out eight while going more than six innings for the first time in the majors.

NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz has reasserted his superiority over Jannik Sinner with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory in the U.S. Open final. Sunday’s showdown was the third Grand Slam tournament in a row where these elite, young rivals met to decide the champion. Alcaraz claimed his second trophy at Flushing Meadows and sixth overall at a major. President Donald Trump sat in a sponsor’s suite in Arthur Ashe Stadium and received a mix of cheers and boos when he offered a wave beforehand and again when he was shown on videoboards after the first set. The match’s start was delayed by about a half-hour because of extra security.

Quarterback Tyler Szalkowski threw for 528 yards and four touchdowns leading Utica to a 49-31 win over Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon. Tyshawn Taylor, Antonio Cianfarani and Bryce Palmer each had more than 100 receiving yards and a touchdown catch for the Pioneers. W&J took an early lead, scoring on the opening drive but the Presidents defense struggled to pressure Szalkowski and to cover the receivers, the top six each with a catch of at least 14 yards. Kellan Stahl got his first career start at quarterback for W&J, passing for 330 yards and two touchdowns, adding a rushing score from 11 yards out. The loss on opening day was the first for the Presidents since 2010.
