The 2023 high school football regular season is in the books for Washington & Greene County teams. Canon-McMillan (6A), Peters Township (5A), Trinity (4), McGuffey, Wash High & Waynesburg (2A), Burgettstown, California, Ft. Cherry, Jeff-Morgan & West Greene (1A) have all clinched playoff berths already. Bentworth & Beth-Center were both eliminated on the final night of the regular season. The WPIAL Football Committee meets Saturday morning with the brackets due to be released mid-afternoon. Once they are available, we’ll post the pairings with links to the brackets.
Canon-McMillan dominated through three quarters on the way to a win over Mt. Lebanon, putting the Big Macs into the #3 seed in the 6A semifinals. 5A #1 Peters Township pounded Bethel Park to lock up the Allegheny Six Conference title and, likely, the overall #1 seed in the 5A bracket. Trinity rolled past Ringgold in a playoff tune-up for the Hillers who will make their first post-season appearance since 2017. Wash High built a 13-7 lead at the half and held off McGuffey to win a share of the Century Conference title and the top seed out of the conference. Waynesburg’s win over Charleroi puts the Raiders into the 2A field. The Cougars finish the season winless. Fort Cherry likely clinched the top seed in the 1A bracket, finishing the Black Hills Conference season without a loss. Burgettstown had already clinched and will go in as the 4th place team from the league. Avella’s home win handed Chartiers-Houston a 9th-straight loss. California won the Tri-County South title outright and eliminated Bentworth in the process. Monessen’s win at Beth-Center clinched the final berth from the conference and eliminated B-C who held a two-game lead with two to play. West Greene and Jeff-Morgan had both clinched and won tune-up games.
NOTES: The win for Trinity is #385 all-time, 6th most in Washington County. Wash High’s win, the school’s 740th (most in the county), gives the Little Prexies their 24th conference title and the 135th win for Mike Bosnic as the school’s head coach.

Game 1 of this World Series was an instant classic, capped by Adolis García’s game-ending homer for the Texas Rangers in the 11th inning. History could be made in Game 2. The Rangers took the opener 6-5 over the Arizona Diamondbacks after Corey Seager hit a tying, two-run homer in the ninth inning and García followed with his winner in the 11th.

Playoff spots, home playoff games, winning seasons, pride…just some of the things on the line Friday, the final night of the WPIAL high school football regular season. Canon-McMillan (6A), Peters Township (5A), Trinity (4), McGuffey & Wash High (2A), Burgettstown, California, Ft. Cherry, Jeff-Morgan & West Greene (1A) have all clinched playoff berths already. 1A Bentworth & Beth-Center and 2A Waynesburg are all still alive.
Canon-McMillan hosts Mt. Lebanon with the winner avoiding #1 Central Catholic in the 6A semifinals. #1 Peters Township can wrap up the Allegheny Six title outright, along with the 5A overall top seed with a home win against Bethel Park. Trinity is in tune-up mode as the Hillers celebrate Senior Night ahead of a first-round playoff game next week, their first since 2017. McGuffey hosts Wash High, with the winner taking the Century Conference title. The Little Prexies COULD still manage a first-round bye with a win. A McGuffey win could drop the Little Prexies to third place in the conference. Waynesburg visits winless Charleroi, needing just a win to clinch a 2A playoff berth. 1A #1 Fort Cherry is at home against playoff qualifier Burgettstown, the Rangers trying to cement the overall #1 seed. Beth-Center hosts Monessen. The Bulldogs take the final Tri-County South playoff spot with a win. Monessen needs a win and a Bentworth loss to California. The Bearcats have to win and need a Monessen win to qualify. West Greene and Jeff-Morgan have playoff tune-up games against Mapletown and Carmichaels, both of whom are hoping to finish on a positive note. Charleroi (2A) and Chartiers-Houston (1A) last won in the final week of last season. Ringgold (4A) hasn’t tasted victory since September, 2021, a streak of 24 straight losses. Avella is home to Chartiers-Houston, the Eagles looking for their 4th win of the year.
Following tonight’s action, we’ll have a full rundown of the scores and the playoff qualifiers. WPIAL brackets are set to be released early Saturday afternoon and we’ll post those as soon as they are available. Here’s this week’s schedule for Washington & Greene County teams (7 pm unless noted)

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Reilly Smith scored twice, Tristan Jarry stopped 31 shots and the Pittsburgh Penguins ended Colorado’s NHL-record road winning streak with a decisive 4-0 victory. The win also snapped the Penguins three-game losing skid. The Avalanche had won 15 straight away from Ball Arena in the regular season dating back to March. Their run came to an end as Jarry picked up his 15th career shutout. Lars Eller and Sidney Crosby also scored for the Penguins, who put together their best performance of the young season behind Jarry’s steady play.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Josh Allen threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, and the Buffalo Bills hung on to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-18 on Thursday night. After a week of questions about his “low-energy” approach and Buffalo’s slow-starting offense, Allen came through for the Bills. He had been listed on the Bills’ report with a right shoulder injury and was checked in the blue medical tent in the second quarter, but remained in the game. Gabriel Davis had a career-best nine catches for 87 yards and a touchdown. Baker Mayfield tried to rally the Buccaneers late, but the game ended on a Hail Mary attempt. Tampa Bay has lost three straight.
