The WPIAL football playoff automatic berths have all been claimed, including five Washington County teams with another two from Greene County. For the other nine teams from the two-county area, the 2024 season has come to an end.
Trinity scored the last 17 points of the game to rally past Belle Vernon, clinching a 4A berth. Waynesburg’s win secured a 2A spot for the Raiders. EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Stuart Skinner made 27 saves for his fifth career shutout, Viktor Arvidsson had three assists, and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0. Evan Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm had a goal and an assist. Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also scored for the Oilers, who had struggled offensively to start the season. The game was highly touted as a superstar showdown between Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and Pens’ veteran Sidney Crosby, but both were kept off the scoresheet. The Penguins have dropped four straight. Despite the loss, Joel Blomqvist had 46 saves for Pittsburgh.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Freddie Freeman hit the first game-ending grand slam in World Series history with two outs in the 10th inning to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees in a drama-filled opener. Hobbled by a badly sprained right ankle, Freeman homered on the first pitch he saw — an inside fastball from Nestor Cortes — and raised his bat high before beginning his trot as the sellout crowd of 52,394 roared. In the top of the 10th, Anthony Volpe grounded into a fielder’s choice to shortstop, scoring Jazz Chisholm Jr. from third after he stole two bases, to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. It was the third straight World Series opener to go extra innings.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rasheem Biles, Kyle Louis and Braylan Lovelace all returned first-half interceptions for touchdowns and No. 19 Pittsburgh breezed past Syracuse 41-13. Pitt improved to 7-0 for the first time since 1982 behind a defense that harassed Kyle McCord from the first snap and never relented. McCord threw five picks in all as the Orange fell to 5-2. Pitt’s three pick-6s were the most in an FBS game since USC had three against Rice in 2022. Eli Holstein threw for 108 yards and two scores for Pitt, which has won 19 of its last 23 meetings with Syracuse.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Demarcus Robinson caught two of Matthew Stafford’s four touchdown throws in the Los Angeles Rams’ 30-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Cooper Kupp caught a TD pass and Puka Nacua had 106 yards receiving in their returns from injury absences. Stafford passed for 279 yards for the Rams, who won back-to-back games for the first time this season with an offense that looked exponentially more dangerous with its top two receivers back in uniform. Sam Darnold passed for 240 yards for the Vikings, who followed up their first loss of the season with an ineffective defensive performance.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees will play Major League Baseball’s starriest World Series in decades. This figures to be the first World Series featuring five MVPs: the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts, and the Yankees’ Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Ohtani and Judge are the likely MVPs this year, marking the first Series to feature both since in 2012. This will be the first Series with a pair of 50-home run hitters in Judge and Ohtani. This is just the fifth World Series since the Wild Card Era started in 1995 involving the teams with the best records in each league.
