October 15, 2024 4:31 am

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos homered as the New York Mets stopped the Los Angeles Dodgers’ record-tying postseason scoreless streak in a 7-3 victory, tying the NL Championship Series at a game apiece. Lindor added to his storybook season with a leadoff homer in the first inning against Ryan Brasier. Viento delivered during New York’s five-run second, connecting for a grand slam against Landon Knack. Before Lindor went deep, Los Angeles had a string of 33 consecutive scoreless innings. Jack Flaherty led the Dodgers to a 9-0 victory in Game 1 of the NLCS on Sunday night.

Bengals Beat Giants

October 14, 2024 4:42 am

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Joe Burrow scored on a career-long 47-yard run on the opening possession, and the Cincinnati Bengals’ defense carried them to a much-needed 17-7 victory over the New York Giants. Evan McPherson made a go-ahead 37-yard field goal in the third quarter after a botched snap and hold contributed to him missing a potential game-winning kick a week earlier. And Chase Brown scored on a 30-yard run with 1:52 to play to give the Bengals some hope after a dismal start to the season. Cincinnati is now 2-4. The Giants fell to 2-4 and they are winless in three home games with one touchdown.

Browns Fall To Eagles

October 14, 2024 4:45 am

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Deshaun Watson’s $230 million contract is guaranteed. Seemingly, so is his job. Watson failed to lead Cleveland to an offensive touchdown, failed to lead Cleveland to its first 20-point game, and failed to lead Cleveland to even a glint of hope it can turn around its season. But coach Kevin Stefanski said after the Browns lost 20-16 to the Philadelphia Eagles that Watson will remain the starting quarterback. Watson finished 16 of 23 for 168 yards and blew a chance at a tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter. He has yet to throw for more than 200 yards in a game this season.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jack Flaherty combined on a three-hitter and Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers tied the postseason record of 33 consecutive scoreless innings by routing the New York Mets 9-0 Sunday night in the NL Championship Series opener. Backed by chants of “MVP! MVP!,” Shohei Ohtani was 2 for 4 with a walk while scoring two runs and driving in another.

Pitt Holds Off Cal Bears

October 13, 2024 8:19 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi spent part of the week grousing about his defense, the one that had served as more bystander than difference-maker during the Panthers’ unbeaten start.  His players were listening.  No. 22 Pitt regained some of the swagger that’s been its trademark for most of Narduzzi’s decade-long tenure, racking up six sacks to cover for a suddenly sputtering offense in a 17-15 win over California on Saturday that pushed the Panthers to 6-0 for the first time in 42 years.  “Some games (the offense) carried us,” said Pitt defensive end Jimmy Scott, who had a career-high three sacks. “This game we kind of carried them a little bit.”  Pitt managed just 277 total yards — nearly 250 below its season average coming in — and did next to nothing in the second half, relying on two first-half touchdown runs by Desmond Reid and a 58-yard field goal from Ben Sauls to take an eight-point halftime lead before holding on.  Pitt, meanwhile, picked to finish in the bottom half of the conference in the preseason, is now 2-0 in the ACC and firmly believes its best days are still
